Microsoft has added a pretty interesting new feature to Windows. Lately, ransomware infections have made a lot of hype, and lots of companies are attacked even on a daily basis. Once that happens you cannot access your data, as it is encrypted, and only after payment, you can decrypt your files.

In the new Insider Preview Build in 2017 you can now spot an experimental ransomware protection. Microsoft mentions it can protect a Windows 10 system by automatically recognizing and isolating known variants of attack software, and adds layered protection by offering backups so that you can recover a system after an attack. The software built into Windows 10 shows the option 'Controlled folder access - protect files, folders and memory areas on your device from unauthorized changes by malicious applications'. Here is also the option to set up recovery options via OneDrive after a ransomware attack.

The feature appears to be running as of Windows 10 2004 (May 2020 Update).
