And one fifth still uses Windows 7. During its quarterly earnings broadcast it was mentioned that Windows 10 is used monthly on 1.3 billion devices. The milestone of 1.5 billion is slowly approaching.

Microsoft had hoped reaching one billion devices by the summer of 2018, this goal was only met two years later. The recent growth can be attributed in large part to increased demand for PCs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In its earnings report for the last quarter, Microsoft reported a 10% increase in Windows OEM revenue , which means that its partners sold more equipment. Similarly, Surface revenue was up 12%, according to the company's report.

Another factor driving the adoption of Windows 10 is the fact that Windows 7 is only supported for businesses that pay for extended security updates, which are not cheap at all. To stay safe, more and more companies are forced to upgrade to the newest version of the operating system.

Microsoft also mentioned that its collaboration platform Microsoft Teams already has more than 145 million daily active users, Microsoft 365 for home users already has more than 50 million subscribers and that the content and services revenue of the Xbox division grew by 34% .
