Toshiba Electronic Components Taiwan Corporation has unveiled the Mx11 family of helium-sealed, high-capacity hard disk drives (HDDs). The Mx11 family includes two series: the MG11, offering up to 24 TB with conventional magnetic recording (CMR), and the MA11, which provides up to 28 TB using shingled magnetic recording (SMR). These new HDDs are designed to meet the growing data storage demands while improving power efficiency and managing operational costs. Both series feature a 10-disk, helium-sealed, 3.5-inch, 7,200 rpm design. Toshiba's flux control microwave assisted magnetic recording (FC-MAMR) technology enhances performance and reliability. The Mx11 drives come with a 1 GiB buffer, a workload rating of 550 TB per year, and a mean time to failure (MTTF) of 2.5 million hours. The annualized failure rate (AFR) is 0.35%.

The MG11 CMR Series is targeted at cloud, data center, and enterprise storage applications, supporting easy scalability within existing infrastructure. The 24 TB model offers a 9% improvement in sustained transfer speeds, reaching up to 295 MiB/s. Available with 6 Gbps SATA or 12 Gbps SAS interfaces, the MG11 Series fits seamlessly into various storage environments, supporting data storage, online backup, archiving, and video surveillance. The series is available in capacities ranging from 14 TB to 24 TB, with additional security options such as sanitize instant erase (SIE) and self-encrypting drive (SED). The MA11 SMR Series achieves 2.8 TB per disk by overlapping physical tracks during write operations, increasing storage density. The host-managed SMR design allows data centers with compatible software to optimize storage efficiency. The MA11 Series is available in 28 TB and 27 TB models, with a 6 Gbps SATA interface and SED options for enhanced security.

Toshiba plans to begin sample shipments of the MG11 Series this month, while the MA11 Series will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.
