Steam limits functionality of users that do not spend money

Okay, that title might look a little weird, so allow us to explain. Steam is enforcing limits on community accounts that have spend less than 4,63 EURO, roughly 5 USD on Steam. Not because they want to irritate you, no it's to prevent phishing accounts and all kinds of nastiness.

Malicious users often operate in the community on accounts which have not spent any money, reducing the individual risk of performing the actions they do. One of the best pieces of information Valve can compare between regular users and malicious users are their spending habits as typically the accounts being used have no investment in their longevity. Due to this being a common scenario Valve has decided to restrict certain community features until an account has met or exceeded $5.00 USD in Steam.

Valve reports this on their support pages right here

Here are the new rules they have applied:

You will need to spend at least $5.00 USD within the Steam store. Some examples of purchases that grant access to these features are:

  • Adding the equivalent of $5 USD or more to your Steam Wallet
  • Purchasing game(s) that are equal to $5 USD or more from the Steam store
  • Adding a Steam Wallet card to your Steam account
  • Purchasing a Steam gift that is equal to $5 USD or more from the Steam store (Receiving a Steam gift from a friend doesn't count)

Each Steam purchase total will be tracked in USD. If your Steam store's currency isn't in USD, it will be tracked and converted to USD automatically using daily exchange rates.
