Seagate is going to be pushing the envelope and will develop up-to 16 Terabyte HDDS. They want to do so within the next year and a half. They also aim to release a bit higher, a 20TB HDD is to be launched by 2020.

The news reached the media through a conference call with stock-holders. Seagate CEO Stephen Luczo said that 12TB HDDs based on helium technology are currently being tested, but that even more capacious solutions are not that far off. Currently the company already has 12 TB HDDs ready. WD also has similar plans with 12 and 14TB models. Obviously such high capacity HDDs are intended for the Enterprise market, data-centers and NAS (network-attached storage), where large capacity HDDs are proving popular among consumers. Seagate has also announced it will release 10TB HDD at a price of 400 USD.

SSDs are ruling the bigger chunk of the storage market, but larger than 1TB is still the HDD domain.
