Samsung Electronics is expected to showcase micro-LED based TVs next year. Micro LED is considered as next generation display technology. With this new lineup, Samsung plans to increase its technological competitiveness while targeting the top premium TV market.
The idea is to gain television sets for a home-cinema experience and reportedly will showcase a 150" TV model. Currently the technology is already used in cinemas. Micro LED is attracting attention as a next-generation display technology next to liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) because it can lower power consumption, be smaller and is lightweight compared to existing materials.
The same technology that Samsung used for its 4K resolution cinema LED has been applied but smaller, the report said, and the model is aimed at the home theatre market. Apple is also reportedly working with Taiwan chip giant TSMC to develop Micro LED displays. Making LED smaller is difficult. Micro LED displays have LEDs smaller than 100 micrometres, with each LED chip acting as a pixel. If realised, Micro LED displays will consume less power and won't have burn-in problems like OLED. If a plastic substrate is used, it can also be used for flexible displays.
Next, to Samsung, Apple is also working on micro-LED panels, however, to integrate into their smartwatch.
