There have been a number of trends in the SSD arena this year, 64-layer 3D NAND, QLC and NAND controllers based on NVMe are on the rise. Samsung, Marvell and Silicon motion already have some excellent controllers, you can add to that list Realtek with the new RTS5762 and RTS5763DL controllers, these reach 3.5 GB/sec.

So when is fast, fast enough? Well, the industry does not pay attention to that and as such we see performance increases each and every year. NVMe based on protocol 1.3 seems to become the new norm for this year, and such controllers indeed reach 3.5 GB/sec (if you pair it with the right amount and type of NAND flash memory of course).

The new RTS5762 will be Realteks high-end controller with support for the NVMe 1.3 protocol. It can manage 8 memory channels but also TLC, as well as the new upcoming QLC NAND. The controller is based on a four-lane PCIe 3.0 x4 interface. The company claims to read and write speeds up to 3,500 and 3,000 MB/s respectively, for the consumer that is. If you check out some of the photos below, you can see some performance tests.

Realtek will also out the RTS5763DL, this is a more 'budget' version NVMe 1.3 SSDS controller. Basically, it's based on the same stuff, however, it addresses a maximum of four memory channels. It hasn't been cut towards two lanes, but still uses a PCI 3.0 x4 interface which brings in read and write speeds of up to 2150 and 1475 MB/s, which is not bad for anything budget. Seen from a regular SATA3 SSD at 560 MB/sec .. yep! The photos below are courtesy of Anandtech.
