Sometimes you should know when to not talk or use social media. Likely this was one of these situations. Over at Intel, Ryan Shrout posted on Twitter a tweet that claims that on M.2 PCIe Express Gen 4.0, a Samsung 980 PRO would be up to 11% faster combined with Rocket Lake-S processors.

As an ex-editor, he probably should have left that statement to reviewers and editors to physically check out, prior to making claims even before release. There are several variables that come into play when testing, even OS power states and where you plug in such an M2 SSD (PCIe slot card or connected to the CPU in a dedicated slot).

The claim he posted is backed with one chart, see below. And yeah, the only thing tested is PCMark 10, which really brings a very limited view of performance. The test used a 1TB Samsung 980 PRO attached to a PCIe add-in card, the i9-11900K would yield 11% faster results compared to AMD Ryzen 5950X, which is the flagship “Vermeer” CPU based on Zen3 architecture. AMD has been supporting PCIe Gen 4.0 SSD for almost two years now.

Rocket Lake-S CPUs are the first series (from Intel) to have dedicated CPU lanes for the PCIe Gen4 storage and this feature will be exclusive to Z590 chipsets.

Time will tell, and obviously .. we'll check it out.
