A week or so ago we noted that NVIDIA would be releasing a GeForce GTX 1060 based on faster GDDR5X memory. Gigabyte is the first to out a graphics card based on the new spec, it's called the GeForce GTX 1060 G1 Gaming D5X 6G
On the US NVIDIA website the new refresh SKU could already be found. By using GDDR5X over GDDR5 NVIDIA is able to create an answer on price and performance towards the pending RX 590, at least that is the thesis. The new model would be priced in the 299 USD bracket. Gigabyte is the first to introduce this model. Normally you'd look at 6 GB 8 Gbps GDDR5 memory on a 192-bit bus. Precise specs, however, are missing, the GDDR5X is listed at 192 GB/s which we hope is a mistake, as that is the same as it was before :) The shader proc count is the standard 1280 units:

Time will tell what this does in performance. We expect AMD to get 5 to 10% faster with their new 12nm models, perhaps the GDDR5X memory on the GTX 1060 can offer a similar increase.
