Elon Musk confirmed that this Friday a Neuralink event will demonstrate in some for a brain-computer interface. The company founded by Elon Musk, Neuralink, is building a BCI, aka Brain-Computer Interface.

This interface would be surgically installed in our brain by a robot, along with all the required components. Once the BCI chips and components are installed in your brain (don't puke just yet) they will provide you with what would be the next generation of computing. You would have the ability to control computers and other electronic devices with just your thoughts.

“We have built small and flexible electrode wire arrays, with up to 3,072 electrodes per array distributed over 96 wires. We have also built a neurosurgical robot capable of inserting six wires (192 electrodes) per minute ”.  “Each wire can be individually inserted into the brain with micron precision to bypass superficial vasculature and target specific regions of the brain. The electrode array is packaged in a small implantable device that contains custom chips for low-power built-in amplification and digitization: the 3,072-channel package is less than (23 x 18.5 x 2) mm3 ”.

This cerebral computer interface would give you the ability to, for example, think "Google, is it going to rain today?" instead of telling the assistant on your cell phone, and the results would appear on the screen. Also, think "I want to hear a song X" and it would automatically start playing.

The primary objective obviously would be (I hope) a life change for people with disabilities. A paralyzed person, for example, could perform actions such as operating a computer, or moving a robotic arms and or legs, for that this is a fantastic idea. Even more advanced would be a neural link with a robot, that robot could be anywhere, even in space.

Neuralink will host a live event later this week on Friday where it will provide updates on the progress of its BCI. Some rumors suggest that the Elon Musk-backed company will announce human trials, something the company had already anticipated in 2019. For now, however, I'll stick to the keyboard and mouse if you don't mind.
