One of the game titles that we had not benchmarked in our Ryzen review is Ashes of the Singularity. It was only afterwards that I learned this title probably took the biggest hit at 1080p gaming with reported performance differentials of even 50%.
Today Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation is release and it has been Ryzen processor optimized.
Now with such a big hit in 1080p performance it is near impossible to optimize in such a manner that you can gain competing Intel performance. However, we had access to the beta build yesterday and I must say, I am surprised by the effect of the optimizations. The team behind Ashes has been able to tweak processor performance in such a manner that we gained roughly 36% performance just from that CPU optimization.
In the pre-ryzen compiles version the ‘high’ quality benchmark run at 1080p (no AA) scored an average of 68 FPS. The new Ryzen optimized build however scores 93 FPS on a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, and yeah that’s a 36% gain in increased average FPS.
In the above chart you can check out the differential in-between the old end new AOTS build. Mind you that the settings are the same, the graphics card and its driver are the same.
In this secondary chart you can see a performance increasement compared to the Core i7 5960X. Now I’ve stated a thousand times already that it’s not really fair to compare a Ryzen 7 1700X with a Core i7 5960X, but hey both are eight cores. We run both processors at default clocks and then both at 4.0 GHz.
Ryzen 7 still is behind, but that gain is impressive and much better. If other game engines from the software houses can increase performance by just optimizing for Ryzen processors, the dynamic could change in the future for sure.
