As the title states, AMD will be renaming FreeSync 2 towards FreeSync 2 HDR. Admittedly a good move. FreeSync (the original one) and FreeSync 2 often got confused, as what the revision 2 exactly means and does. FreeSync 2 really is LFR and HDR compatibility added to what FreeSync 1 offers.
During an interview with PC Perspective, a spokesperson of AMD made this news info public. If a monitor received a FreeSync 2 certification, it must support at least HDR600, 99 percent of BT.709 and 90 percent of the DCI P3 color spectrum. It is also mentioned there's a requirement on minimum response time, albeit a figure is not disclosed.
I think it is a good move to separate the two a bit more, FreeSync 2 HDR has little to do with variable refresh rates. Yesterday we reviewed a FreeSync 2 HDR monitor, check that article out right here.
