Western Digital silently now is offering 12 TB variants of the Red and Red Pro hard disks. This further extends the maximum capacity of the series. They are tagged under SKU codes he WD120EAFAX and WD121KFBX.
The RED series is an excellent one for NAS servers where capacity matters. These units are expected by the end of May 2019. On the product pages of the manufacturer, there is no information about the HDDs and an official announcement is still pending. Merchant Computeruniverse lists 5,400 RPM and 256MB cache for the WD Red 12TB and 7,200 RPM and 256MB cache for the WD Red Pro 12TB, which was expected in both cases. The 3.5-inch HDDs are primarily intended for private (WD Red) and commercial (WD Red Pro) use in network storage systems (NAS ).
The prices listed in (r)etail are way off and should drop to a normal level once they become available.
