To get a good picture of the performance of storage units in practice, we run various so-called real world benchmarks, tests that are based on the use of real applications. The tests include a series of reads, writes, and copies under a set of specific conditions and applications.
A trace test is a more real-world performance test. Obviously, an SSD is going to obliterate an HDD here which has a much harder time dealing with loads of small files.
