Noctua NH-D15 G2 Review - Proper Performance, Massive Price

Noctua recently launched its NH-D15 G2 series of air-based coolers, these new models provide superior cooling performance while maintaining low noise levels. However, the cost has increased, with each set now priced around $150, which is quite steep and comparable with a lot of AIO Liquid Cooling solutions. This raises the question: Is the product worth its price? Noctua has introduced the second-generation NH-D15 cooler, offering refined performance and formal support for Intel's next-generation Arrow Lake-S processors in LGA1851 packaging. Alongside the NH-D15 G2 CPU cooler, Noctua also introduced the NF-A14x25r G2 140mm fans. The NH-D15 G2 is an enhanced version of the popular NH-D15 cooler, featuring eight heat pipes, two asymmetrical fin stacks, and two speed-offset 140mm PWM fans to minimize acoustic interaction phenomena such as periodic humming or intermittent vibrations. According to Noctua, these components are designed to work efficiently together to deliver quiet cooling performance, rivaling many all-in-one water cooling systems and enhancing air cooling efficiency. The cooler's eight heat pipes and two asymmetrical fin stacks enhance heat dissipation, while the dual 140mm PWM fans are speed-offset to avoid acoustic interaction, ensuring quieter operation. Noctua's focus on minimizing noise without compromising cooling performance makes the NH-D15 G2 a strong contender against many water cooling solutions.

Noctua offers the NH-D15 G2 in three versions to cater to the specific requirements of modern CPUs:

  1. Regular Version: Versatile and compatible with AMD's AM5 processors and Intel's LGA1700 CPUs. It includes mounting accessories for both platforms.
  2. HBC (High Base Convexity) Version: Tailored for LGA1700 processors, especially those subjected to full ILM pressure or that have deformed over time. It ensures excellent contact quality despite the concave shape of the CPU.
  3. LBC (Low Base Convexity) Version: Designed for flat rectangular CPUs, providing optimal contact on AMD's AM5 and similar processors.

All versions of the NH-D15 G2 are compatible with a wide range of motherboards and other hardware. The offset construction of the cooler ensures clearance for the top PCIe x16 slot on most current motherboards. Additionally, the upgraded Torx-based SecuFirm2+ multi-socket mounting system and Noctua's NT-H2 thermal compound enhance the overall installation and performance. Noctua also introduced the NF-A14x25r G2 140mm fans, available separately for those looking to upgrade existing coolers like the NH-D15, NH-D15S, or NH-U14S series. These round-frame fans are fine-tuned to minimize noise levels while offering efficient cooling performance. They are available in single and dual fan packages, providing flexibility for various cooling needs. In addition to the round-frame version, Noctua plans to release a square-frame version of the NF-A14x25 G2 fan in September. This variant is targeted at water-cooling radiators and case-cooling applications, extending the versatility of Noctua's cooling solutions further.

The Noctua NH-D15 G2 coolers are priced at $149.90 (USD) or €149.90 (EUR). The NF-A14x25 G2 fan costs $39.90 (USD) or €39.90 (EUR) for a single unit, while a package of two fans is priced at $79.80 (USD) or €79.80 (EUR). The cooler is backed by a six-year warranty, ensuring long-term reliability and performance.
