Age/Occupation/Location?
I am 19 years of age. I teach kids guitar at a local music store. And i also throw news papers for the chicago tribune for some extra cash. I live in Lake Villa, Illinois, US.
How long have you been a member of Guru3D forums?
I have only been a member for hmmm, let me see, One day! lol. I've been members of many forums, and I love your site a lot. It has wonderful articles. I have always been caught up in reading them that I never noticed the forum section, and when I finally checked them out I was suprised to see how well done they are.
What did you first come here for?
I first came to Guru3D.com searching for a review on a 6800GT. Shortly after reading your review I was convinced and bought one.
What do you mainly use the system for?
GAMING! Plus I do a little recording on it as well, but mainly gaming. I am obsessed with games. They have taken all my money.
How much did you spend on the rig?
I spent a lot... a lot more then I'd like to admit to, but I spent $2,614 and that's just on this computer. Right before I built this I bought a Dell 8400 for around $1,600, and soon found out it sucked so I decided to rip out the CPU and ROM drives and built one from scratch. But now I also have a P4 3.6 2mb L2 660 CPU soon to come costing me about $620 bringing the total up to $3,234.
How often do you update/buy a new rig?
It seems like I will never stop updating. My rig now can handle anything I throw at it, but when ever I see new stuff I feel like I have to have it. Its kind of a sickness, lol. I found out that Nvidia is releasing their 512mb Ultra very soon. You know I will be buying one, then another, and a new mobo to go SLI. But thats in the future.
What components are used?
P4 LGA775 3.0 @ 3.6
Asus P5AD2-Premium
2xgig of Geil DDR2-533
X-CONNECT 500w PSU
The CD and DVD rom drives out of the old Dell
Audigy2 LS
evga 6800GT @ 400/1150
Why ATI or NVIDIA, why Intel/AMD?
I dont have anything against ATI, I just find the Geforce6 series to appeal more to me. I like their company and will keep buying their cards. I went with Intel for the reason being the processor out of the Dell was an Intel, so I based my new system around that and I love it. No problems with Intel at all.
Does the system work as expected?
The system does more then I expected it to, but not at first. When I first ripped apart the Dell for parts I also took the RAM out of it which is PC2-3200. Very cheap ram. And with all the fast high end parts, It was giving me a big bottleneck so that's why I bought the Geil RAM. After I got that, I was a very very happy man.
What's the best part of your rig?
The best part of my rig is the fact that I did it all. I studied very hard, researched all the parts and did a lot of homework. This was my first build and it came out really well, and im really proud of myself for doing it. It was a great experience and I dont think I'll buy one from a company anymore. I had too much fun building one.
What sucks and should not have been bought?
Haha, there are a few things here. The case being #1. I have an acryllic case. A very poor material for maximum cooling. I am purchasing a Coolermaster Wave master in June. I'll be much happier with that. The next thing I regret buying is the PSU. I shouldn't have bought the X-connect because it sucks. I dont always get good power from it, and the light up fan inside it died on my after two days of owning it! It is all show and no go. But my biggest mistake is of course buying a Dell.
Modified cases/video cards/other? Did you do it yourself? Walk us through it.
Well I pretty much went through all this in the other questions. But yeah, I did it all myself in my room. I bought piece after piece until I had all of it, then just jumped in and built the beast up. I dubbed the computer...The Inferno. LoL.
