Let's look at the M.2 SSD now. What an incredibly simple layout, just two NAND chips (256GB each), one controller and a cache chip.
Even the backside is empty, no SMT traces, nothing. The two frontside NAND FLASH ICs are arranged directly towards the Marvell 88SS1074B1 controller.
In the photo above you can also see the DDR3 memory cache chip from Samsung, the 512GB M.2 SSD gets more DRAM cache, 1024MB of it. Since this unit only has two NAND chips, there are less controller channels to access, that has an effect on performance and thus that's diverted by a bigger DRAM cache.
