The Patriot Torqx series SSD drives are incredible, really really incredible. Now we've see products like these before, I mean OCZ's Vertex is based on the same Indilinx controller, and the G.Skill Falcon we recently tested is up-to the PCB and component precisely the same as this little gem we tested today. More of the same is good, as that creates competition and will drive prices down.
The performance we retrieve from the SSD is far-fetched really. Armed with the latest controller firmware we really see some true magic happen. Read speeds of up to ~230 are certainly not uncommon, and write performance (although you can measure that in many ways) was just as stunning closing in at 190~200MB/sec.
The onboard 64MB cache controlled by that multi-channel Indilinx controller will make sure the entire process will go smooth, we mentioned it many times now, but the initial small files write 'issue' has been obliterated completely thanks to the implementation of large caches. The next step in the evolution of SSD drives probably will be even bigger file caches.
The Torqx series SSD drives are perfect to run your Operating System from. You will be amazed by the sheer speed initially, but after a day or two .. that performance will become normal in your user experience. It's weird I know, But I have been using SSD drives as primary boot drives ever since last summer. You'll get spoiled by the sheer performance as I certainly got used to it very quickly, making the process of working on my PC definitely more efficient.
The recent debate that SSD drives will get slower over time we are leaving to rest. Sure performance can and will go down a little, but is that any different from a mechanical HDD ?
So let me wrap things up, other then pricing there's just nothing that comes to mind ever remotely negative about the Patriot Torqx series SSD. It's a stunning SSD with stunning performance. Also, very simple, but we like the little drive bay for easy 3.5" placement in a PC very much. It's the little things that count I always say.
So then, the Torqx series SSD comes at a price though, they start at roughly 369 USD for the 128 GB version. Please bare in mind that the 64GB model has a lower write speed at 135 MB/sec and as such we recommend you to opt the 128 GB or bigger model.
More good news, Patriot extended the warranty on it's Torqx product towards 10 years, which we think is just great.
Man .. what great SSDs these are, absolutely brilliant. A I am starting to grow an itch and would like to find out what two in RAID0 would be capable of ... hmmmm ?
