Underneath that R sticker is in fact a SIS IC, it is a SiS RAID controller, model 3124 SoftRaid 5. Softraid indicated that it will hog CPU cycles for it's operational tasks. We measured that and CPU utilization will remain low at all times though.
A little Maxronix CMOS MX29LV Series 3. And all the way lower on the PCB we see a Pericom PCI Express Bridge, the PI7C9X130 making the PCIe 4x link happen. The typical usage in this configuration is to bridge legacy 64-bit PCI products to PCI Express systems.
Now there is one thing I like to add here, the card has a x4 PCIe lane design. That doesn't mean you need a dedicated x4 PCIe slot. You can pop it into a x16 slot and it will work fine.
