Final Words and Verdict
Final Words & Conclusion
The OCZ Enyo is a perfect example of what we like to see as fast storage solution. There is plenty of choices on volume sizes to play around with and the speeds well are downright blazing fast. Enyo -- I am still puzzled about the name as typically OCZ's naming schema has a deeper meaning. So it's either Enyo which means "warlike" in Greek mythology, an ancient goddess of war, acting as a counterpart and companion to the war god Ares. Or did they made a sneaky reference to Enzo .. as in Ferrari ? :)
In the topic of sheer performance, let me make this very clear, results will vary per controller and or motherboard. Currently there is a lot of USB 3.0 Host controller dependency to chipsets and available PCIe bandwidth. Some manufacturers even tied just one PCIe link towards the controller. Now that still gives you fast performance, but for a product like shown today, you really want something really good. Proper implemented USB 3.0 motherboards come from Gigabyte, ASUS and MSI right now. But make no mistake, the 'lesser' solution are still tremendously fast.
We tested on the MSI Big Bang XPower and suffice to say that we are overwhelmed by the overall performance. The question now becomes, do you really need that much read/write performance for portable storage, as it is an incredibly costly product. Well that depends on your needs. Surely not if you only need to transfer some documents. But a lot of people these days carry around movies, backups or simply like to have some system application portable. It's for that kind of demographics where the Enyo kicks in really well. For the rest, well certainly the price tag will be driving them away.
Next to all that scrumptious performance is there a downside ? Hmm, no not really besides the price tag. Wishful thinking however would be the integration of a eSATA port as well. But really USB 3.0 is all you need at blazing fast speeds. To get a little extra performance, OCZ will make a specific driver available, we used that driver in this review and it help you to go from fast to furious really. But sure, it's not mandatory.
That said, it really is a lovely device showing extraordinary performance on the USB 3.0 bus. Plug it into a USB 2.0 controller and it will still work and as such it makes it a very versatile and compatible product that you can use in nearly all scenario's. We can very much recommend the Enyo for what it is and delivers, the price tag is high though, too high for most of us. But it is a darn nice change in the industry to finally see some USB 3.0 storage unit out there. Be gone thy slow high latency USB 2.0 ! All hail the new king.
