9. What's the best part of your rig?
The best part is that I was able to utilize Air Cooling in a unique and challenging situation: a slim profile case, with a 6 core CPU. All the components came together in a functional and appealing way.
10. Any dislikes, things you should not have bought?
In hindsight, a 4 core CPU would have been enough for my needs, as well as generate less heat. However, the X99 motherboard was a gift, so I used it instead.
11. Did you modify anything ? cases/video cards/other? Did you do it yourself? Walk us through it.
I did some modifications myself to enhance the airflow and aesthetics:
- I cut the plate behind the GPU and the exterior panel behind it. I made a 240mm fan bracket from the removable HDD plate, and installed two Noctua fans as intake fans. I also experimented with Push vs Pull on the CPU fan, and experimented with Positive Vs Negative pressure airflow.
- I replaced the PSU fan with a Cryorig XF140 fan to match the Cryorig C1 cooler theme. The Corsair PSU uses 135mm mounting, so I used some nylon screws and nuts that were flexible enough to bend and snap into the 120mm holes of the fan.
- I painted as white the plastic accents on the TridentZ Ram so that they would match the theme. I slightly cut the top edge of the heatsink of 2 of the ram, so they would fit under the C1 cooler. I also decided to display the TridentZ on the left side of the CPU for a unique look.
12. Your 3DMark scores
I currently do not have 3DMark, but my Asus Realbench score is 105,000. Using Air cooling alone, I am able to do a mild overclock of 4.2 ghz at 1.21 volts. For daily use, I stay with 4.0 ghz at 1.18 volts. My CPU cache is overclocked to 4ghz, and RAM is at 3200 mhz.
13. Do you have any future updates planned ?
I plan to upgrade to Broadwell-e or AMD Zen. I also intend to purchase a new Polaris GPU.
14. Does your rig or mod have a name ?
My rig is called 'Stormlight'. Named after the Stormlight Archive book series.
