Gigabyte X58A-UD9 review

We spot not one but two 8-pin CPU power headers; you could use only one of course, using two is not mandatory. This board is based on a dual power switching design that, when activated, sees two sets of 12 power phases that operate independently from each other.

In IDLE one set is powered up, the other is powered down, allowing the non active set to rest. With built-in failure protection, the system can continue to boot even if one of the phase sets fails.

But when you load up the system / processor for performance then all 24 phases are unlocked which, according to the company, delivers "the highest amount of CPU power currently available on any desktop motherboard." This obviously is for pure overclockers alright.

You'll also find Molex peripheral power connectors, here close to the first PCIe slot, this one you can use to feed your graphics cards some more juice over the PCIe bus, yes everything about this motherboard screams extreme. If you look down a little, the NEC chip is in fact the USB 3.0 controller.

We see quality solid core chokes and obviously the LGA 1366 socket for Core i7 based processors. The board incorporates the latest Ultra Durable components like solid capacitor, ferrite core chokes, quality components and nothing else. This ensures stability -- but also reliability and extended lifespan.

Once we flip the board around once more we again stumble into the DIMM slots, DDR3 of course. There is DIMM support for six 1GB / 2GB / 4GB / 8GB DDR3 DRAM sizes -- up-to 24GB in triple-channel configuration. There is support for DDR3 2200+ / 1333 / 1066 / 800 MHz memory modules straight from the BIOS and XMP profiles, and of course then higher with overclocks.

All the way down we stumble into connectors, buttons and SATA ports. Let's zoom in a little to the far right just under the DIMM slots.
