So, how do 100 Amps on a single 12V rail sound? Yep, 100Ax12V=1200 Watt. And that is just the 12V rails. This also is the selling problem for the THOR, I mean a 600W PSU could power two high-end graphics cards, for enthusiast-class graphics cards above a 200 Watt TDP. Personally, we would recommend the 850 Watt model. Most high-end graphics card eats roughly 15 Amps per card and 20 at best, the math here is simple. Albeit the new RTX card is known to peak in short bursts to a higher amperage, 25A.
It is powered off, but here you are looking directly at the small OLED screen that is going to display your active power consumption. All of the power supplies in this series have the necessary protection functions, even in extreme conditions. Below is a list of the included protections:
- OCP: Over Current Protection. This function will latch the power supply off if any given rail is overloaded beyond a safe level.
- OVP: Over Voltage Protection. This function will latch the power supply off if voltages exceed specification.
- UVP: Under Voltage Protection. This function will latch the power supply off if voltages drop below specification.
- SCP: Short Circuit Protection. This function will latch the power supply off in the event of a short.
- OTP: Over Temperature Protection. In the event that temperatures exceed a specified value, the power supply will latch off.
- OPP: Over Power Protection. If the total output power of the power supply exceeds a safe level, the power supply will latch off.
The Thor power supplies have a modular cable set that allows you to use only the cables you need for your particular set of components. When it comes to wiring we feel that there are enough connectors for the 1200W PSU model we tested. Have a look at the supplied connectors, all with decent length by the way. The benefits of this dark sleeved design are a cleaner, neater look. The cables are also of decent length to support full-tower cases.
Not all cables are sleeved though only these:
- 1 x 24-pin ATX (MB)
- 4 x 6+2-pin PCIe
- 2 x 4+4-pin EPS (CPU)
The ATX motherboard connector cable is roughly 55 cm, the Molex and SATA power cables up-to 80 cm, the 4/8-pin CPU ATX power connector cable is at a great length of roughly 60 cm and the PCIe graphics connectors reach 50cm. You will receive multiple sets of PCI-Express graphics power connectors, in total allowing 8 x 8/6-pin PCIe connectors, that's half (4) for the 850W model btw.
Once you give it some juice, it is a different beast though. The visible side illuminates with (default) red ROG logo. You may, of course, connect the PSU towards an AURA SYNC compatible motherboard and tweak your RGB experience to whatever preference you would like.
We have hotwired the PSU here, in the photo above it is NOT connected to a PC or any components during this photo-shoot. You can see it is utilizing 17 Watts, the result of that is, in fact, the RGB lighting, the OLED screen, and the fan.
