If phone companies can charge an arm and a leg on their highest tier phones year after year, what's stopping Microsoft, Sony from doing the same? Game consoles already do more than just playing games; they are pretty much mini entertainment computers in disguise, just with proprietary OS and far better optimization.
Back on topic, i predict that their highest specced console wouldn't be really cheap, given what's included within. $899+ish seems like a good estimate.

Console specs that out perform the average gaming PC for a low price isn't a new concept, and it doesn't make gaming PC's obsolete or irrelevant. For that to happen, it would need to do everything a PC can do.
And unless Microsoft is so generous to let you install a real operating system on their new console, it will never be able to compare. It will simply do everything every other console has done, only faster.

Considering the console will be sold at a loss, theres no way they'll allow it to be used as a low cost pc, they want you to buy first party titles to offset the production costs.

@Astyanax Which is why the many news articles around the web (and people here) saying this console makes PC gaming obsolete is foolhardy.
It's competition is Sony. It's sole reason to exist is Sony.

This will definitely not be sold at anymore than $600, I will bet that.
Main reason being Microsoft will not do anything to mess with the PC market that's buying at $1000. Everyone needs to remember, this is bought at bulk, with very specific design, to be recreated over and over, to the point where Microsoft may lose a little per console sold(as they've always sold), but will make up for it in subscription and accessories. Even though a number of products that are sold to be compatible with the Xbox, items that are sold to be Microsoft Xbox certified they still make money off of.

Can we get a poll on the price please?
Something like 300,350,400,450,500,550,600,650 would be a good poll range by the esteemed members of the Guru3D Allumi

If you could use it as a PC, for both gaming and work, I'd get one right away

I don't think the ps5 is going to have a cheaper version like the series s, and the ps5 uses the same chip as the xsx. That's important...
Sony is still skittish from the horrible sales of the ps3 $599 launch price. Console players don't understand inflation. Or don't care.
Microsoft learned their own pricing lesson with the original launch of the xb1, being $100 more expensive killed them.
The xsx will be priced according to the ps5. This console might be cheaper than you think.

Been reading about the new machine today and wow what a beast. I don't think the PC will be catching up any time soon in refinement but obvs plenty of scope for heavy lifting.
Seems also that M$ is using a variant of AMD's Store MI but with more capability curtesy of the Box using an SSD.
Fantastic machine and to be fair its brilliant.

the PC will continue to spank the consoles.

Current consoles are basically PC's. What will sell these consoles is not specs. Exclusive games will. I think Microsoft still underplays that fact. Sony gets it, they are putting a lot of effort into getting unique games, currently working with Konami to revive Silent Hills.
Luckily, both Sony and Microsoft don't view the PC as competition, because it's not. Microsoft has already started putting all games they make also on PC, and Sony has started doing the same (although delayed).
If Sony continues that mindset, you could view the PC as a way to save money even, effectively owning both consoles in one.
