And here I am thinking 65W for an entire laptop is too much. What's even the point of this? With the amount of cooling and power delivery necessary, it isn't going to function as a laptop anymore, let alone be portable.
I agree with both of you and i feel the industry as being going the wrong year regarding the power envelopes of components in the last years... Companies should be making parts with better power patterns, not the other way around...

if just the gpu is 175 watts ... then ram +cpu +hard drive + screen etc will be at least +50 watts ...so 225 watts ...both the power supply and the laptop that have em up will be an absolute unite .....does it really classify as "Lap-top" anymore ? portability will be limited at best

and as a result the laptop will be bigger and heavier because they have to cram in enough cooling as well , any laptop with this card and the card set to 175 tdp will be an absolute unit .

Cooling wise imagine will need some beefy Cooling for both Processor & Other Components, as well as the Video adapter itself. My 2017 HP Omen (15_ce019dx) Laptop with my Geforce 1050TI already runs on the warm side, hasn't offically overheated or crashed while i do anything on it, but have felt it very warm during some gaming sessions when Desktop was out of service or busy with another task

Eh, it seems like most of ppl here are not used to gaming laptops. To extract the most performance from your gaming laptop, you'll need to plug in it in - in a sense it's a portable (compact) desktop. And it has always been like that, nothing new. You got like 1 hour of battery life while playing games unplugged with reduced (but most of the time, still sufficient) framerate, but for normal stuff like web browsing, some light content creation softwares, battery life is pretty good because almost all mid/high end gaming laptops now have 90+ Whr battery (the limit is 100Whr, any higher than than and you can't bring your laptop on airplanes). And most gaming brands also moved away from the DTR behemoth, flagship gaming laptops now are around 2.7-3.0kg for 17" version (around 4kg if we count the adapter - which is still lighter than old giants like GT76, Mothership, Area 51m,etc.). If you're into ultra portable performance laptops, there are many choices weighing from 1.8-2kg now (granted, they'll use lower wattage GPU version, but a 90-105W RTX3070 Laptop can still handle 1440p gaming very well).

Isn't a "gaming" laptop pretty much a desktop replacement for people without space and/or need for a desktop? I always thought that - and not portability - was the main reason behind these SKUs.

Yes, for me at least and my old GT73VR with 1080 did lose only 5% to desktops. Now the difference is vastly bigger.

Mobile variants of the pascal gpus ware same. My 1060 mobile is bascially the 1060 desktop but 80w instead 120w so slightly lower core clock.

oh no is not that ...is that really the use cases are not that many , while a decent performer ultra light ultra portable has a lot more flexibility ,that said .... a laptop with this gpu might indeed perform better than a same priced desktop nowdays ......so it might be even a "good"buy somewhat :P

They are still more handy than a tiny form factor cause of the battery and the screen as well . 250 watts laptops are not a new thing but they actually interest a very small portion of the market. My initial comment was about the faster mobile card claims. Where yeah no kidding pushing more tdp makes things faster ! Duh 😛 . And yeah i your laptop tdp all together is 110-150 watts of course is portable.
