That is not a silly question, the answer above is correct. The U2 interface will hook up towards PCIe with four lanes, on PCIe Gen 3.0 that would mean 32 GB/s of available bandwidth corresponding with M2 performance. We have seen some U2 interfaces implemented on Intel chipset based motherboards, however, it never advanced in the consumer segment, ergo the enterprise market still uses it.

U2 was made for enterprise mainly and was already standard there when it reached main consumer segment. Also U2 things are more expensive than the regular equivalent, it may explain the main consumer fail. Asus and Asrock still have NVMe to U2 adaptator in their catalog, but don't expect more than your regular NVMe bandwith and speed.
