U2 was made for enterprise mainly and was already standard there when it reached main consumer segment.
Also U2 things are more expensive than the regular equivalent, it may explain the main consumer fail.
Asus and Asrock still have NVMe to U2 adaptator in their catalog, but don't expect more than your regular NVMe bandwith and speed.
