Well, this proves one thing.
There will be choice between the Start screen and the Start menu. That's nice.
But, that Start menu is hideous to say the least.

Windows 9 seems to be handling much better than Windows 8 there. Truly optional Metro or Desktop instead of forced Metro/flip to Desktop is way better. It's how it should have been. There was no point forcing desktop users to navigate out of the Metro screen every time they logged on.
Now all they gotta do is add a media player with blu ray support and full functionality of the OS in offline mode and they have a deal. Oh and get rid of those fugly childish looking Duplo tiles in favour of the sleek, Windows 7 rounded glass look.

I think it looks fine. I want them to focus on other things aside from just start. Getting Cortana fully integrated into the OS and porting kinect features over would be awesome.
Like to me Windows should be a hub for all my information across all my devices, even if I own say an Android phone. I want the notifications on my Android phone to be shown in Windows natively, without the use of something like pushbullet.

Looks pretty good, works as I thought it would.
Functionally the same as a Win 7 start bar but with customisation on Win 7's pretty useless right panel.
And you'll be able to unpin all the tiles if you so wanted.

Yay Start Screen! 😀

No reason for me to upgrade.
Windows8.x works just fine with no internet connection.
MS removed the ability to play DVD's to cut down on cost. They removed features that were deemed "unnecessary" to most uses because some users didn't want to pay for features they didn't use or that they were already buying from a 3rd party anyway. Due to licensing costs, it's doubtful that MS will add the DVD codecs back or add native support for Blu-ray. Nobody wants to see the price of Windows go up even more just to get blu-ray compatibility.

I don't understand why MS wouldn't just release Windows 8 with this functionality.. seriously. Far more people would have adopted Win 8 if they would have just provided this simple option right from the start, I believe anyway.
Seems ridiculous that something this fundamental would take a whole OS version to implement as a standard.. wtf.

Possibly because they were so adamant that metro was a big win that they deleted the code relating to the start bar from windows (at least that's what they said, early win 8 builds still had the start bar that you could re-enable with a hack) and had to rebuild it from scratch.

Sweet a pin to starmenu that can take up half the screen cause they still have this obsession with metro ui tiles
At lest my startmenu is back even if they changed that too

about the flat look that everyone promote (M$, Apple etc etc), i think it will be like the edge design in car...
everyone does it, then 2 year after it look so outdated...
i get the new Opera in flat look and a kid using my Htpc told me "you should get the new opera yours look like a gran pa"... it was the latest O dev lol
anyway i like the "choise" and so i like W9
lukas_1987_dion
I still don't like it, looks like a hybrid of Vista and ugly W8.. But there is still some time for them to make this windows ''9'' actually better this time and also to look nice like W7 or better..

I actually prefer the Start screen over the Start menu.

YMMV, I click it for a few things but being able to customise it is welcome.
Right now its mostly just disabling and enabling the default links.
