For a Star Citizen i would not be surprised if they are actually in game screenshots.

Need I say again what I've said before? Might as well... This game is a Zero-G dogfighting game, and would/should have taken an incredibly short time to execute - and unless they release this element of the game and submit it to be critically reviewed, it does not deserve any attention. With every blog post, video, screenshot, podcast, tweet, flicker and general PR push - they are proving again and again they are scared to death of the critical impact this would have to the free money being thrown at them, by people shepherded into doing so. There is nothing of interest to anyone interested in GAMES here - move along people, move along.

So how is this different then any other game that's in development? Are we requiring all game studios to ship portions of their games at intervals now for review? Edit: Wait they did release the dog fighting module and it has been reviewed... http://www.pcauthority.com.au/Review/390372,review-star-citizen-arena-commander.aspx

whilst I've been following SC for some time, i was also a backer for Elite Dangerous by frontier developments. and I've got to say it seems that frontier are miles ahead and beyond to what SC has planned, and with the amount of money this project has raised i find it hard to comprehend why its taking so long, oh and i wonder how many alpha stages there will be too.....lol
I definitely agree that development seems to be going slow, but there are some differences here between the two projects. Frontier started Elite Dangerous in 2011 and got additional funding in 2012 but it already had a studio in place long before that. It shipped the finished game in 2014, so it essentially had a 3 year development time. Cloud Imperium started in 2011 as well, but it had no studio. It took them nearly 2 years to build the studio up. Development on the game only ramped up in 2013. And I think you would agree that the initial launch scope of Starcitizen is much larger than Elite Dangerous, so it's obviously going to take longer. Should the scope of Starcitizen have been more direct? Probably. Is Chris Roberts being a little too ambitious? I think so. But it's not like he's taking the millions of dollars he received and bathing in it. They are clearly building something. They've released modules, they've shown the work they are doing on the single player component (Squadron 42). Will it ever be finished? I don't know. But I do know it takes years to build games of this scope. Blizzard also had millions of development dollars sunk into World of Warcraft, it took them 5 years to make that game. And they already had the lore and story and everything to go with it. So I don't really get why people are surprised SC is not done yet.

Yep Elite Dangerous is miles ahead. I found SC clunky and too complicated and has awful controls for xbox controller. I wouldn't be surprised if it fails.

It's different. I've used a basketball analogy in the past, if you dig up my posts I'm sure you'll find it. And that link is not a review of the game.

Yeah I really don't care about your analogy. If you're too lazy to find it yourself and post it then it's probably not relevant. You said specifically in this thread that they wouldn't release the dog fighting element of the game because it would effect their funding. But they already have released the dog fighting element of the game a year ago and have updated it several times. It hasn't seem to effected their funding at all. That link is most definitely a review of the dog fighting element. There are tons more if you simply google "review arena commander star citizen", some offer more details than others. I personally don't care to read them because I have zero interest in the game. If you have a valid complaint about the game's development I'd love to hear it. But so far in this thread AMDJoe is the only one who brought any reasonable issue up. I do think the vast majority of people will be tired of the game before it's fully finished. It happens all the time with games that get modular releases. And it's hard to build hype when most of it is playable now.

Good grief... I used an analogy because the toxicity of the thread I was involved with deemed it necessary at the time. I certainly was not lazy to write it, so reverse logic will not work on me, 'sir. They didn't release the game with just the key element of the game (dog fighting) and then release the additional elements as either: 1) DLC 2) Free 3) Both of the above IF (hypothetical) the key element of the game (dog fighting) was good enough to justify release (supervention), they would have released (conclusion). Dropping an unfinished demo onto people who 'back' your game to pacify them is not releasing a fully completed game. If it was, there would be a review score 'final' judgement and it would be in sales charts and tracked accordingly. Having someone 'blog' about your demo, constitute a review it does not. The validity of any compliant I have is that the banks said 'no' to funding. So did publishers. And yet, CR has mitigated risk by getting people to give him free money so he can build something which he and only he will control. The day he runs out of money will be the day the game gets released for reals - until then, he is doing everything and anything to stop that day from coming. If you believe otherwise, then I do care - not the other way around. Fleecing the gaming community is ultimately what sickens me. Ubisoft and EA releasing the same game every 12 months is not a crime. This is the real crime.

I got this game when I bought my R9 290, but I still haven't played it yet, mainly because I've had enough other games to play in the meantime. I'm still waiting for the game to get more polished (particularly, beyond alpha stages) and by then I hope their Linux release will be ready. I know they're working on one but there doesn't appear to be any ETA.

Yep, pretty funny how people want to bag on this game. I have been playing Chris Roberts games since the early 90's and have never been disappointed. This is looking like his latest masterpiece, most likely his greatest.
I'm seriously laughing at all you idiots who think this game will not be released. Seriously LMAO. To all non-idiots here's a recent gameplay vid from a couple of days ago from the 2.0 PTU.

The game's scope has expanded beyond just dog fighting, and it made that expansion years ago. None of the people that are giving him money just want a dog fighting sim. They want racing, they want FPS, they want dog fighting, they want exploration, they want a single player campaign. And they want it wrapped into a nice package. Instead of just going into hiding and making all that behind the scenes, he opened the development for the entire community of people who donated/pledged to watch. He released modules as they were completed and allowed backers to not only play them but influence the future of them. I don't see how that's a crime. And honestly, for the most part, the backers of the game are pleased with how he's handling it. The only people that seem to cry about it are people that have no financial stake in the game. Every time Star Citizen gets brought up on Guru3D there are always random people, who clearly didn't pledge at any point, that come in and just spew streams of garbage all over the thread. On the flipside you have people that have donated/subscribed/pledged who are clearly happy with the game, even in it's current state -- as evident from quite a few of them in this thread. They are adults and they are capable of making intelligent/responsible decisions with their money. Like I said, I don't know if the game will ever be completed or be a financial success or ever accomplish what it set out to do. But it's pretty clear that Chris Roberts is working on it. The money didn't go to waste, it didn't just close up and the entire project get scraped. It's clearly being developed, they are clearly hiring top talent (like Gary Oldman and Mark Hamill) and they are clearly developing and releasing modules.

My only worry with this game is...are we going to be exhausted of all hype before the game actually launches? (ironic coming from an AMD guy I know :P )
Are you saying we shouldn't be hyped about the new drivers :P because we are 🤓

Also it's good to point out that Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are pretty much two different things. Star Citizen is the "MMO" part (kinda like Freelancer's multiplayer). Squadron 42 is single player game (epic story etc.). Latest S42 teaser looks great:
Looks good. With exception of shadow resolution. Considering images are downsized, those shadows may be considered bad. But on other side, it looks like problem only on exterior images. And they have a lot of time to polish graphics. Not that I would judge final product based on IQ.
Shadows are horrible at the moment but they are working on it. Current ones are buggy and visually subpar compared to anything else. It kinda shows that the CryEngine's shadow system is not designed to handle large areas.

Controller optimisations are the last thing they do once everything is more or less final. Also flight model is constantly changing and it receives huge update in 2.0.
i find it hard to comprehend why its taking so long
I don't. In Elite there's no localised physics on ships, no FPS, no exploring your ships (AFAIK)... nothing interesting. In Elite you can just fly. It doesn't take much resources to achieve that.

Can't really comment on the on going additions and weather it truly is what the community wants. I can however question is that what the ORIGINAL investors wanted? The guys who did pay for just the dog fighting space sim? The guys who are now waiting for the completion and final release of a polished and completed game that they paid for but are instead having to wait while module and feature after feature is added to the game because 'the community' wants it? I can see where Looby is coming from, what those original investors bought in to way back when is certainly not what the game is now or is planned to be. Now maybe the dogfighting module is amazing maybe it is a fully contained full purchase game that cannot be improved and has all the content it will ever need (I doubt it I've seen some of the let's play and it looks boring at best and just plain awful at worst, just opinion.) I am not an investor in this project, as it looks now chances are I never will, but I can say that if I had bought in at the start for one type of game only to find that the developer has decided to add features I never signed up for while only giving me a half finished version of what I originally paid for, well I'd be a bit annoyed. Saying that changing the refund policy and release timings allowed for refunds in the EULA (i.e giving the developer more time to meet release dates) is seriously dodgy in any ones books. Saying that I agree with the idea that this game will never be released, while it is drawing in cash under the guise of adding new content it will forever be in a pre release state with the final release only coming when the cash finally runs out.

I understand Chris Roberts dream and ambition but i also think he's biting off more than he can chew. I don't know if his vision can even be realized with current tech and especially using DX11. Surely this project must be an absolute nightmare to accomplish and work straight out the box on all systems. I just don't think DX11 has the draw calls or raw GPU power enough for this game. I think the game will get finished and Chris Roberts does make amazing games but i honestly feel that this game will be a failure in some regards and Chris won't be able to pull some magic out of his arse to save certain dreams he has. PS. I'm not saying it will be a bad game but i'm betting his vision can not be 100% completed with current hardware and sales will be smallish because Requirements will be ridonkulas.

Actually he already delivered on most of the original kickstarter goals:
When Star Citizen’s Kickstarter launched, Cloud Imperium gave us stretch goals of up to $6,000,000 beyond the original funding goal of $500,000. They only managed to hit just over $2,000,000 on KS, but they didn’t let that stop them. Looking at these small numbers, it’s a bit unbelievable to see how far the game has come. These stretch goals were pretty basic. They added a few ships to the game, and greatly expanded the scale of the game’s universe. At $6,000,000, over 100 star systems were promised to ship with the final game, and the single player campaign—Squadron 42—would become a full-fledged Story Mode. These tiers also promised many users some free ships and other swag, as well as access to the Dogfighter Module, which is available now. All of these promises have thus far been fulfilled, and it doesn’t seem like any will be cut. Again, these were mostly incentive-type prizes for backers.
The only one that is still being worked on is Squadron 42, which they've shown off recently -- it's supposed to be done by 2016. Pretty much all the other things are stretch goals that have been added along the way. http://cliqist.com/2015/03/11/star-citizen-stretch-goals-what-where-are-they/ https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals And again, the game really hasn't been in development that long. People think it's long because it made media and was announced before it was even in development. But most of the heavy work only started 2-3 years ago and they had to build an entire studio from scratch. 2-3 years is pretty normal for regular AAA games, Mirror's Edge has been in development for 3 years. Fornite by Epic Games is now at 4 years. Witcher 3 was also 3 years. Yet all these companies already had established studios and pipelines for content development. Cloud Imperium had to create all that from scratch before it even began the game. Idk. I just feel like Chris Roberts doesn't deserve Peter Molyneux levels of hate. He's delivered multiple successful games in the past and it's pretty clear that they are working on on developing this one. Yeah the project has run into delays as the scope has expanded -- but at least you can track it's progress and see the development first hand. I personally haven't backed it and probably never will because I don't care for space simulation games -- but I don't see an issue here.
That is the thing I personally want. Any of you SC defenders care to speculate when that will happen? FYI, I already backed the Kickstarter a while back.
It's set to release late 2016. They showed off a bunch of the motion capture sequences and part of the initial story line a few months ago. There was definitely some bugs and rough edges but with most of the modules finishing up it should come together pretty quickly. He needs it to launch to continue funding the rest of Star Citizen -- backers get it for free but the rest have to pay for it. So if he doesn't finish it by 2016 his company is screwed for the future anyway.

Reminds me a bit of Return To Proxycon 🙂
