They could had bought Konami, but it seems they only wanted to punch Microsoft

Kinda strange, considering Bungie is pretty much the only reason Xbox survived a single generation. It's not like MS depends on them anymore, but it must be kinda demoralizing for some of the other studios MS owns if they can just sell someone off like that, especially that that amount of money.

I can't see where that number comes from but 3.6 billion for just one IP is crazy. How many successful games must they release to even start getting that money back. Even an amazing new Destiny 3 comes out that is still just peanuts compared to 3.6B.

My experience with Bungie is just so-so. The used to do some Mac-only stuff years ago, and the stuff they did for x86/D3d/OpenGL was just "OK" I thought. Tried Destiny--didn't like it at all--but that's not fair because I'm not really into multiplayer. Sony must be getting the whole studio, developers, et al. Still a lot of money. But I thought Microsoft was nuts when they spent $2B on Minecraft, that Bizarro-World simulator...;) Sony is trying to counter Microsoft's sudden realization that gaming is where it's at these days--and not just console gaming, either. Computer gaming is very strong these days.

Bungie have stated that they’ll be maintaining their independence even to the point of continuing to self publish and staying multi platform so I doubt much will change.
Sony doesn’t really go after studios with the intention of buying up existing IPs, what they do offer is the funding to create things that studios might not have been in a position to do without that safety net.

Destiny is one of those games that I never played and never had the desire to. So I'm biased when I say that this sum surprises me, are there really enough players into its microtransactions setup to justify the billion dollars purchase?

With Minecraft i understand it because it still sells well even though it's so old and they have mobile now too. I doubt many are still buying Destiny 2 and even if they release more content/expansions i highly doubt many including myself will go back to it. I played about 60 hours of Destiny 2 and liked it but i soon got bored with it and preferred The Division 2 over it.
