I thought the whole point of soundbars was to get rid of the mess of cables and need for loads of speakers?

The unit doesn't come with anything but the soundbar. The subwoofers and rear speakers are optional and work only wirelessly, according to the Amazon page. If your sound source supports suitable wireless transmission, I guess the power cable would be the only strictly necessary cable. If you don't pay extra, you won't have a "load of speakers" either. Although obviously the more speakers you have, the better the sound, so wanting the utmost simplicity is always a big compromise. Most people only use their TV's integrated speakers, after all.

I used to be really into surround sound. After spending sometime in audiophile world I found I liked a high quality two front speakers stereo better. Ymmv.
