the best policy for having high capacity at low risk is just user's sensibility. if you have the money to buy a 22tb drive just get two 10/12tb ones, the most crucial data goes on both.drives go into a docking station that you can just turn on when you need to,without the disks constantly going on/off.

rather than 22tb units, why not $99 12tb instead? it seems they only cater to datacenters now where physical space is the main concern, otherwise 4-8tb 550mbps seq r/w rust would be at $60 to remain competitive

...how do you figure a 4-8tb hdd would hit those speeds? Unless you are talking about SSDs...even though this is about HDDs...bit confused here

Yep as HDD sizes keep increasing, I see less and less need for "complicated" RAID setups and one can just go easy peasy RAID1 with 2 really large disks for home use.

Don't really need a RAID setup for home use. I would rather recommend to go for a decentralized backup instead that is only accessible during backup- or restore-process. You can use it to backup all your data either in an automated setup or manually every once in a while. RAID is just for redundancy, it's not a backup. If you delete files in your RAID, they'll be gone, just as much as they'll be gone when you get a cryptovirus or anything else that makes your files inaccessible.

Overkill in a lot of cases for home use. I mostly run RAID not as a backup, I run it specifically for when a drive fails. If my house burns down I have bigger issues to worry about tbh 😀

tech gets better? every HDD I bought has been faster than the last, within 10-20 years I've seen them go from like 35mbps > 65 > 85 > 120 > 150 I've seen a friend's new drive doing 180 or so, at this rate we might reach sata 3 limit by 2030

We've been around 150 for 10 years now, i doubt traditional HDDs will ever reach sata 3 limits. There is a sata hard drive that is able to do around sata 3 limits, sustained speeds, on the outer rim. But its random read/write go back down to 304/384. And this drive achieves this by affectively being two drives in one, so nothing really special there can already achieve this with raid and you cant even buy this drive. Unless some serious breakthrough happens we are definitely not going to be saturating sata 3 speeds with traditional HDDs any time soon, not even 2030, so to be focused on that aspect, thats just not going to work well. Plus, the reason SSDs are so snappy isnt even the speed, but the lack of moving parts. Something HDDs will always have.

Standard 7200 rpm drives are around 300 in sequential speeds now...

Looks like there are some pretty expensive drives getting near those speeds, which makes sense given the drive i talked about, but i wouldn't say that are standard, but sure lets just go with they exist. Doubling the speeds i saw around 2008-2010 isnt exactly breathtaking, and its still the outer rim. Fill the drive up even a littlw you wont get those speeds. HDD technology has slowed no matter which way you look at it, the platters are getting more dense but the speeds are inching along. So as i said, i dont see saturating sata 3 speeds from HDDs unless some crazy new technology is made for a long time and given the fact that SSDs are the norm now, HDD manufacturers dont have a big reason to focus on speed, just capacity, for enterprise. And even if that does happen, which would be good ofcourse, it still does not change why an SSD is actually faster then a HDD in terms of day to day useage. A lack of moving parts. The only way to get around this limitation with platters would be to create a drive that does not movw and reas/write heads that encompass the whole platter and can access everything instantly. I know of no one trying to get this done.

I agree with your overall point, but i have a 14 tb drive that does just above 300 in sequential with 6 tb of the 11. something tb usable filled 🙂
