Would have hoped for Epic getting trough with this, since Apple's policy also hurts the niche market when it comes to supervised app additions for people with special needs.
Unfortunately we can't give Apple the middle-finger since there are no alternatives.

To me Apple shall first change they'r policy. Why do I need to buy thing through, why does they need to know how I spend my money.
And if I develope a game why can't I pay for it to only be show on your store, and the rest is up to me.
And finaly, why can't I install apps from outside without Jailbrake.
To me Apple is a joke, people are still whit them because this is how psychology works (in poor country it show status, and in rich country it is normal to buy only from recognized companies).
Still to go for the game engine is a cheap move (maybe they want it for them).
Epic is not a nice company but what Apple did is cheap. But more and more it seems to be a normal for US company's that are adopting Trumps and his policy. Where they are the bigest and most important in the world. to bad for other company's in US that are not like them.

It's Apple's store to do as they please, period, in regards to Fortnite being allowed or not.
Pulling support / banning support for entire game engines would be / could be construed as malicious if the terms weren't violated on the app being pulled (e.g. pulling Epic's ability to service Unreal engine for it's customers - again not for itself, but for customers; merely because of the Fortnite store issues with violating terms). Now, if they have a clause that pulls the plug on the entire developer's account - then Epic needs to make it so another company name (even though it's still Epic) does the servicing of Unreal Engine vs deploying Fortnite, so that issues with one do not mess up the other. Apple is in the clear if the clause is present, and sadly, it usually is.
It's just a shame to see what happens when the company feels like it's being unfairly given a disadvantage due to it's attempt at cost-cutting, when it wastes countless digits of money on bribing game studios for exclusive store access.
So really, since I am one of the guys who couldn't dare be bothered by tech when I am out - any old phone will do especially if it doesn't ever ring... Since I have no time for Apple and no part in the "constant ADHD smart-phone zombies", and wouldn't even use their products over another company's product if it was free, I don't have much of an opinion here. I still don't know why folks could be so sheltered they could walk down a city street thinking they are safe ignoring their surroundings glued to a telephone...with headphones on to boot! They wander right into cross walks like that.
Also do not care for EPIC constantly pulling shady moves like bribing developer studios for exclusivity - especially if done at the last minute like Metro Exodus (and I still haven't bought or played that because of it).
Where I come from though, things are much more laid back out in the country, where an iPhone has no social status benefits. In-fact you're more likely to look like a fool / hipster or be made fun of for walking around with your face glued into it, not paying an ounce of attention to one's surroundings.
When you're 40 or so years old or older, a phone is a phone, as long as it works. Anything more than that is just saying 'I am foolish with my money, just part of the herd' (if you need it for work / your work paid for it that's another story). Of course, I only go out and buy a 10~20$ phone just to have someone/ a means to call triple-A if the car decides to act up (not that it's going to, it's a Corolla).
There are people out there who live so outside their means that they need to have a payment plan to pay not only for a car, but for a handheld computer too (not to mention other medium-price items like appliances or furniture, WHY?). Try saving up your money to buy these things, Live within your means. I tell them, you pay a lot less for it that way, vs obligations to contracts / plans that you can't often cancel for a month if things get tight (causing them to have little money in the first place). Though I couldn't fault a family who can only live check to check, and goes to Rent-A-Center for a fridge in the middle of the week out of pure necessity (though it's expensive there, try having a household without a fridge, that is definitely tougher than without a smart phone).
It's not up to apple to please everyone, they have a product, that's it. Take it or leave it. If you don't like it, buy something else. Take a chance on that Android with not nearly as sheltered as an ecosystem.
I dunno, sorry for the rant... but I digress, a lot of folks would be better off saving money and buying any half-capable device at a good deal, provided it does what you need it to (not want, but NEED).
