This was what the R9 285 should have been. This performed roughly the way I expected it to. If the 285 had 4GB to begin with I'd have got it, but thankfully I got my 290 for a decent deal.

Nice card, decently priced. It barely costs more than gtx960 4GB version. I would still rather buy second hand custom R9 290's thats around the same price. And yeah, like always great review HH.

I'm missing Far Cry 4 / Dragon Age III Inquisition or more recent games in test. Also this card fits more in Full HD resolution to play any games, not higher, so showing comparing performance at 2560x1440 i find kind of useless.

Everybody misses something of their personal game preference I guess. We have a broad scope of benchmark titles. As to your 1080P remark, this card is specifically sold and marketed as WHQD graphics card, as such we display that in the comparison charts.

It fits very well with 1440p.
? Think you mean 1080p...... For 1440p ideally you want a 980ti...well was last time I looked. If I make the step up to that res I will upgrade my gpu..

Thanks for the review! I play at 1080p, but it's easy to imagine the FPS will simply be somewhat higher there compared to 1440p, and it doesn't change the relative order. I'll have to see what the prices will look like over here to make any decisions. Performance wise 390 would be more tempting, but my case isn't any max air flow one (it could be, but then it wouldn't be silent anymore), so the amount of heat would be troublesome.

Yeah, for 1440p R9 390X/GTX980 minimum. As for 1080p 380X would be very capable indeed. It cost 20Eur more than gtx960 4GB, i think thats a no brainer.

Have to mention typos about 2560x1440 resolution. Frontpage's description says WHQL and inside review it's WHQD 🙂 Maybe should be WQHD Otherwise great article as usual.
LOL - WHQL -> WHQD -> WQHD ... amazing how the brain works 🙂 All Fixed, thanks for noticing.

No direct comparison with 280x 🙁

No direct comparison with 280x 🙁
Idk why though. Its a replacement for 280X so why not include direct comparison HH? Other sites does it, if not all of them. You still have one around, right? No love for Tahiti here anymore.

I suspect 384-bit GDDR5 plays a large role in my performance. Thanks AMD for gimping the card!
They didn't really gimp anything. 380X is meant to be a reasonably priced mainstream card. Your old cards were from the upper portion of the range of their time and considerably more expensive when launched. If you are used to the AMD enthusiast class, you should be looking at the Fury cards, or 390X at least. That being said, 380X still beats HD 7950.

Amazing to see this card killing 384bit variants of the same GPU (new die same specs) AMD has done a good job on this card.

I don't understand how this is so much slower compared to the 280X on hardline benchmarks. Slower than the 7970 too? That doesn't seem right...

Plain jane 980 can do 1440p all day long, even the 970 and handle 1440p with semi decent frames maxed out. 980ti is more in the 4k range.

Hi Guys, I am after a driver update for this card that has continued dx12 support. There are some games that I am starting to get the following error; "dx12 is not supported on your system. try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument" I currently have the latest AMD GPU (22.6.1) and chipset drivers (5.05.16.529) and was after a modded version. Your help with with the above will be most appreciated. Regards Wilko
