This was what the R9 285 should have been. This performed roughly the way I expected it to. If the 285 had 4GB to begin with I'd have got it, but thankfully I got my 290 for a decent deal.

Nice card, decently priced. It barely costs more than gtx960 4GB version. I would still rather buy second hand custom R9 290's thats around the same price.
And yeah, like always great review HH.

I'm missing Far Cry 4 / Dragon Age III Inquisition or more recent games in test.
Also this card fits more in Full HD resolution to play any games, not higher,
so showing comparing performance at 2560x1440 i find kind of useless.

Thanks for the review! I play at 1080p, but it's easy to imagine the FPS will simply be somewhat higher there compared to 1440p, and it doesn't change the relative order.
I'll have to see what the prices will look like over here to make any decisions. Performance wise 390 would be more tempting, but my case isn't any max air flow one (it could be, but then it wouldn't be silent anymore), so the amount of heat would be troublesome.
BLEH!
Good review. TY

Amazing to see this card killing 384bit variants of the same GPU (new die same specs) AMD has done a good job on this card.

I don't understand how this is so much slower compared to the 280X on hardline benchmarks. Slower than the 7970 too? That doesn't seem right...

Hi Guys,
I am after a driver update for this card that has continued dx12 support.
There are some games that I am starting to get the following error;
"dx12 is not supported on your system. try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument"
I currently have the latest AMD GPU (22.6.1) and chipset drivers (5.05.16.529) and was after a modded version.
Your help with with the above will be most appreciated.
Regards
Wilko
