Interesting video on why Portal RTX may not be quite as good as everyone hopes it is [youtube=eBldBRkr1TQ]

Couldn't get past the first minute of that video with him claiming it's bad because of sentimental value.

I am annoyed by his sensationalism and incredibly poor diction, but ad hominem aside, he does make valid points with regard to the remake's visual design and art direction.

It's not really there to make us love Portal again, it's there to be an example of what you can do with remix. They probably used Portal as one of their test games when developing remix, having gotten it working they polished it a bit and are releasing it. I expect you'll be able to get access to the code so other enthusiasts who want to "remix" their favourite games can give it a go.

I don't think this will have desired result. It just exposes how prohibitively expensive and restrictive RT really is. Haven't yet tried it myself but 1080p 60FPS on my 3080 according to benchies, this is with all the trickery of DLSS upscaling and such. Just imagine how defeated people with mid range specs have to feel seeing these performance numbers. And also, this shows that we can't have complex and modern AAA games with this level of RT for the next 10 years at least.

2 crashes to desktop so far and I can't find any instructions on little details like how to enable/configure RTX and DLSS. Feels like a rushjob. Now where is CP2007 DLSS3 patch?

This game also crashes to desktop a lot for me 😏, not ready for prime time. It feels more like an nvidia ray tracing demo than a game 😳

weird, no crash for me, I'm on the latest driver. Also weird is Portal RTX looks just like how I remember how Portal look LOL

Well, I've given it a go. DLSS3 is very impressive but it doesn't make 25FPS feel like 60. It works for at least the early levels of Portal but when reactions and timing are required, I suspect it'll show it's limitations. If you had 150fps without it, it would be a great addition. The RTX is OK. I think Cyberpunk is just as good despite it not being full raytraced. In Cyberpunk, RTX adds a real sense of depth to the scene, I'm not even sure Portal is quite as good in that respect. My first CTD was after messing around with the standard in-game settings (not RTX setting). Second CTD was after alt-tabbing. So far, no more CTDs

I think that`s just what it is in the end. I´ve already read a review about this "new" version of Portal and apparently AMD´s cards are crippled beyond believe!...

That was to be expected. I dont think anyone thought new (or old) AMD GPU's would do well here.

I wonder if and when FSR3 is out, would this RT enhanced game support it? Or, like Metro Exodus PC Enhanced, there's only official DLSS support.

It's a tech Demo from NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios, so I doubt there will be any FSR.

So is there going to be a benchmark review on Guru3D for this title?

A game I bought back in 2007 as part of The Orange Box gets me a worthy update in 2022, who would have predicted that. Younger members might be interested in the concept of The Orange Box, just look at what we got for our money, that really was 100's of hours of gaming for a single purchase.

That was what got me introduced to Steam - that's why they did it! No, but it was good, and they were also my re-introduction into gaming after a period of minimal & no gaming from 1998 - 2007. It was quite a revelation at the time! I was super impressed by Half Life 2 and the corresponding episodes!

Can also barely understand him, he speaks like he has a sponge in his mouth.

I'm wondering if eventually they'll end up combining DLSS 3 with something like VR's "Asynchronous Reprojection" -- Linus and 2kliksphilip made videos somewhat recently on the subject and it might be interesting to see if Nvidia's AI approach could help address some of the artifacts associated with that technique. Not sure if it'd work or not, but I'm surprised we've only seen AR used in VR at this point.
