i wonder what nvidia and amd have with the number 8 skiping the 8000 and the 800 πŸ˜€
Thought they skipped those monikers as they where mobile parts (8000 and 800) so not to confuse consumers then went to the next one up, or in AMDs case changed it all together lol

This is pathetic from Nvidia..its the second time they have done the renaming scheme as they felt inadequate or lacking behind the naming scheme of AMD as the numbering doesnt match the high end feel of AMD..
One can just as easily say that was exactly what AMD did when they changed their scheme to the Radeon HDxxxx, or the recent Rx-2xx nomenclature.
They jumped from the 200 to the 400 series and now with 700 to the 900 series naming as it does have a feeling of being behind ..AMD has a R290 scheme in number same as before ,so nvidia cant bring out a 800 series ..it "feels" behind:3eyes:
Yet you ignore the fact that AMD changed their whole naming scheme less than a year ago. What happened to the HD8xxx or HD9xxx cards? Those names wouldn't have been confused with the ancient ATi All-In_wonder 8500 or 9700pro, 9800pro/xt/etc, since not only are they a different brand now, but I doubt few consumers even remember those cards. Come to think of it, they also skipped past the HD1xxx, HD2xxx, and HD3xxx. Why is that? would it have anything to do with marketing the product and what model numbers did best in a focus group? It's hilarious to see someone get so worked up over something as trivial as this. I have a feeling you're just bored and after seeing this news decided to jin up a little manufactured outrage. lol. here... this will occupy you for a bit. It's always good to educate yourself on the topic before making such ridiculous comments. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

Did it ever cross your mind that they went to the GTX 9xx series because the current Kepler mobile 8xxM chips already occupy that range of numbers, and since These new cards are a new architecture, it would be best not to make consumers think those mobile chips are Maxwell as well?

They can use what ever number they want. I assume you it was big deal to you when AMD went straight to R2xx instead of R1xx.

Gibbo: 980 / 970 4GB reference cards with 8GB coming at a later date with custom coolers. Can’t say any more but don’t expect a huge leap in performance over current single GPU stuff.
Gibbo: They replace 780, not 780Ti. Performance wise, my lips are sealed on how it compares to 780Ti, but of course 980 is quicker than 780 for sure!

Interesting that there is no custom cooler versions of the 4gb models. Hmm maybe that will change.

He didn't say that, I read there that the 8GB models won't come with reference coolers. Still, 8GB models with custom coolers... I hope they're around for the holidays... :frown:

If that leak was true then no doubt, 870 aka 970 was slower then 780, this 980 should be ~ 14SMX Titan performance, which most 1ghz 780 surpass by few %. I think my next gpu upgrade will be when there is literally 1x faster gpu by same TDP. Kinda like what 780 was to 580, literally 1x faster + some more πŸ™‚

yeah I meant +100% faster πŸ˜€

I will better like to see them release the "big "maxwell directly, call it GTX980, with a leap of 50% in performance and release his little brothers then.
This is how it used to be, no more though, now it's all about maximum profit. But still, as we have gotten used to, it is not worth it performance increase wise to upgrade GPUs each generation, but every 2 generations (in cpu-mobo-ram department, even more). I for one am looking forward to these cards and will likely upgrade when aftermarket models are out.

Yep, if the price is right these will be great for those who are still on the 5xx/6xx series for sure πŸ™‚
yeaaaaah hope so.. I'm starting to see my 670 struggle a bit, and if I end up going for one of the new 34" monitors set to release in the coming months, this may be a nice stepup for a reasonable price.. IF its a reasonable price.

Looking at my rig, I kind of get the feeling it would be a nice time to upgrade, as I was planning anyway πŸ˜€
