With these leaked benchmarks, clock for clock the 780Ti is faster or equal, never losing. Hopefully pricing is good.

you can't compare them clock to clock, these cards aren't even built on the same architecture

When the benchmarks that are leaked start with the clock speeds and then percentage differences for said games/becnchmarks, yes it does leave it open for comparison.

Clock for clock it is way more efficient but less powerful interesting. And yes different architecture but I think it is very interesting notion.

Nvidia saw no point in releasing the real deal, since AMD had nothing ready to counter it.all
There is absolutely no way Nvidia could have released GK110 in March 2012. Sorry. GTX680s and 690's were near impossible to get until late May early June that year due to the manufacturing at TSMC @ 28nm. GK110 would either have been ~$1500 or they'd make one working chip a week. Yeah the side effect to that is them making money and im sure that no competition played a role in their decision but the bottom line is GK110 couldn't have been released then even if they wanted it to be. And it's pretty obvious why both Nvidia and AMD moved to refresh cycle between each major architecture upgrade. I posted it about it earlier in the same thread. This **** costs a **** ton of money to design and architect. Prices of GPU's have hardly increased much over the years compared to the cost of inflation, manufacturing and design. Intel realized this years ago and is the reason why they switched to a Tick-Tock release cycle. GM204 is perfectly fine for a release. If you don't like the performance wait and buy something else down the line. This isn't rocket science.

Not sure why some in this thread talk as if "well, its only 5% faster, so no point to this card" with attitude.. You guys know that people can buy this card, and then *gasp* SELL IT, when something new and better comes along right? Sheesh. Sometimes the positions people take on here are pretty ridiculous to me. I will grab one of these 980GTX, and then down the line if a TI does emerge with more vram, I'll just upgrade to that when its available. What's so hard about this?

Seriously so far the only ones disappointed are 780 owners lol, so what you wait another 3-6 months and you'll get your 1000$$ titan II, im happy the rest of us are getting cheaper and seemingly a little faster 780s with much lower tdp :P Hell the main reason i didnt jump on a r9 card was mostly that insane tdp

Time to make some popcorns... Please guys stop it, no need for argue about this, better grab some chick near you and burn some testosterone with... you know  Funny about this (and every other) release of high-end GPU's from new generation is that always there are some (jealous maybe?) guys spiting on new technology arguing with others waiting miracle to happen and those who look and expect for some real benefits of new technology. All in all I see A LOT of unused testosterone hore, boiling, lol edit Cut the crap, my lady is not going to be near me tonight so my "stick" is going to stay "dry" tonight ant that's why I'm also nervous a bit... What the hell, I also have need to burn some testosterone righ here - right now, so question is who's gonna agrue with me tonight here and for what? Any volunteers? 😉

Spot on. Yes this card is for those that are on 6 series or less that want a one card solution with enough memory and have the option of SLI later.

Also, don't forget that a 980 that is 13% faster than a 780ti right now will most likely become around 20% faster with a better driver. Then you have the extra vram to shut up those vrammongers, also low TDP and a cool chip. I really don't see what is not to like about this release.
Fully agree.. its a bit off putting to tell you the truth. Its like unless the card is 50-70% better than a previous gen its just not good enough for them. Whatevs, these cards look great, especially for people like myself who are still on < 680.

The die size reductions should mean more chips per wafer, if I'm not mistaken. Gtx 580 had die size of 520 mm2, gtx 680 294 mm2 - only 56% of gtx 580. Gtx 750ti has a die size of 148 mm2, comparable gtx 660 is 221 mm2 - 43% difference.
You said Nvidia released GTX680 because it had no competition, inferring that if it had competition they would have released GK110 (780Ti) in March 2012. 780Ti is 561mm2, GTX680 is 294mm2. If they had released a 780Ti sized chip in March 2012 on 28nm it would have been insanely expensive. TSMC could barely manufacture 294 with decent yields, there was no way they were doing a 561 chip at that time.

Looks like AMDs shatting, should see the 290 prices on clockers, all on the 'This Week Only' deal as well 😀

Those days are long gone. It was back in the day, when we had 3Dfx Voodoo, Matrox, Nvidia were starting to teeth, also AMD... everyone was just trying to beat the rest of the field. Now we only have 2 manufacturers, they both know what the other team is doing and they act accordingly. I would stop wasting my time on these nay sayers if I was you, some people have no knowledge on the matter and only copy 'n paste stuff they read somewhere ages ago.
I mean I get why people are upset about it I just don't get what people expect Nvidia to do. From a business perspective they need to maintain cashflow throughout the year. Their next available major architecture won't be ready until mid-late 2016. If they release GM210 right now, what is their income going to be for the next two years? It's not like they can just magically come up with something in between. GM204 is the in between. I just feel like the vast majority of people commenting are doing based on their desire and not in reality. Which is fine until it gets weird and people make it sound like a conspiracy to screw the customer or something. But really, think about it. If they released a GTX980 GM210 right now, what happens in Q2,Q3,Q4 2015 or Q1, Q2, Q3, 2016 to Nvidia's revenue? It's obviously going to drop because vast majority of people will have already owned the card. And it's not like they have something to release during that time so what happens? "Sorry shareholders no dividends this year because we literally have zero profit". Like if 90% of people here on Guru3D ran a business it would be belly up in 2 weeks.

Pretty insane stuff here. VXGI and VR SLI.

Idk are they? GF110, next gen high-end GK110 is literally 100% faster, I dont count these in between gpus GF104 > GK104 > now GM204.. I bet full blown Maxwell GM200/210 will be too, literally 100% faster then GK110.

^ Benchmarks on there, if true, AMDs sunk!

If u don`t believe the price is 549 u can pay more,I really don`t care. But many retailers also confirmed that this is the price for GTX 980.
Doesn't seem like he really cares if he has to pay more to me 🙂 Thank you for the post to benchies.. this card, if priced at $550 is strong in my opinion.
