So slower but more efficient than the 780...

Haha, it's not slower than the 780! Looking forward to the reviews on these, Firestrike benchmarks put 980's slightly above 780ti, but I'd be interested to see if that stack up to game performance too - I reckon 780ti & 980 will be about equal for actual gaming performance (Firestrike favours Maxwell).

Wait for the official reviews and benchmarks. Those "just" 2k cuda cores might perform as good as 2500 of the Kepler cores at same clocks. Also, the Maxwells clock higher out of the box, so possibly overclock better than Keplers. Just wait and see, during the next days we will surely know if the 980 is merely a refresh, or if it brings some performance gains too, besides lower power consumption and heat.

it'll be slower than -Tj-'s. πŸ˜€ hehe
I guess he has a monster overclock!

no, but a 384-bit bus or something. no idea what it is.
You've lost me, a 780 is a 780, you can only overclock it, memory bus specs stay the same.

That's probably about an inside joke there πŸ˜‰ Well compute should be better on the maxwells than on the keplers, no?

Seems like the 780ti is still the best in raw performance. Except maybe the 4GB vRam. (lol)

Upgrading 780SLI to 970SLI ? What you think guys?
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/87/87487.jpg
One thing that puzzles me is the memory bandwidth...the GTX 980 has 33% less bandwidth than the GTX 780 Ti: 224 vs. 336. Is that correct? Doesn't memory bandwidth determine how well a graphics card handles higher resolutions and/or anti-aliasing? If so then it looks like the GTX 980 is going to come up short in that department... :3eyes:

Na, 970 is only a little faster than 780, hardly any difference - save your money or wait for the next high end card after the 980! Or better yet wait until a die shrink next year.

Maxwell has proven to be very efficient with it's bandwidth usage, as seen with the 750ti. As a means of comparison, you can pretty much take Kepler bandwidth and double it when comparing bandwidths between Kepler & Maxwell - one of the reasons is the larger L2 Cache of Maxwell.

you folks don't get it clearly, anyways the 780ti classified killer has arrived. got compute?
Aren't you the guy who basically said compute didn't matter when AMD had the superior compute card?

and what if gtx 980 can OC to 1400mhz with absolute ease? πŸ™‚
That's were I think it might be a win over the 780, as Vet too stated about the chances for overclocking. I always hope the big (204 maxwells, so not really big like 200) will overclock like the 750Ti, which is fairly nice to play with. As between SLI 780 vs SLI 970, I'd stick with the 780s unless you see any problems at higher (highest) resolution with lots of eye candy.

Compression and better memory controller will likely nullify that difference.

I guess I will have to wait for the reviews then (I hope someone leaks one early...someone always does!). To be perfectly honest, I am hoping that the GTX 980 benchmarks are not that impressive in comparison to my GTX 780 because I really do not want to be tempted to upgrade. I'm weak like that. I know that there are no games out now or coming out in the next few months that require anything better than a single GTX 780 at 1920x1200 but that will not stop me upgrading if, say, this card is 20/25%+ faster. I know it won't. So please, please be disappointing!!! πŸ˜€

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy one, I've got the cash and the old 570 really isn't doing the trick anymore. Part of me wants to keep holding out for the ti or whatever, but I think I've held out long enough

I really like the improved efficiency...I'm growing extremely tired of my hot and noisy GTX580, even if I did get it for just $130!

Nvidia informed that the NDA would be lifted 1 day early so.. today

I think you will cave in and buy a 980, pretty much guarantee it.:)
/weeps Do you think there's a chance that a GTX 980 Ti will follow this card in three months? That is what concerns me more. I know whatever card you buy, that something better will eventually come along but I was mildly annoyed when the GTX 780 Ti was released for the same price as I paid for my GTX 780 only three months earlier. I would not have been so bothered if it been 9 months or more though as I expect new high end cards each year or thereabouts. Is the GPU that the GTX 980 is using a full product or does it have some of its shader cores disabled like the original GTX 780/Titan vs. GTX 780 Ti/Titan Black?
