nVidia is only HW maker company which invades market by introducing (invading) proprietary technology into "Open" Standard.
Invading? Lets just give a re-cap Example 1: Nvidia doesn't make a "proprietary" technology, therefore, no one ever sees what it does, as it doesn't exist. No extra eye-candy for anyone. Example 2: Nvidia DOES make a "proprietary" technology. Unlike Example 1, people with nvidia DO get extra eye-candy, however, people not using nvidia, are still Example 1's outcome Why would you want example 1? are you that much of an anti-nvidia or competitor fanboy that you just feel the need to say "OMG since i can't have it, NO ONE CAN!!!!!"?

How so? The SoC in the Shield is a Tegra X1, which is a full 64-bit 8 core(x4 a57 and x4 a53 cores), 256 maxwell shaders that support Open GL 4.5, Open GL ES 3.1, and Nvidia Cuda. It can also push 4k at 60hz! This is one hell of a powerful SoC, being able to play high end PC titles even. Can a Sony Smart TV, or an older Samsung Smart TV do that? No. What makes this even better, is with its specs it'll actually last longer than 2 years which is about the average timeframe of current SoC's in being relevant in performance. In this little chip alone, there is over a teraflop of performance! I really don't think you understand where this product lies, and what its purpose is...
I understand the market has UHD televisions and games consoles. The UHD teevee's have HEVC/H265/VP9 decoding capability, plus do whatever they need to do for UHD content. The games consoles fill every requirement for gaming. This box is not filling any gaps in the market and is being presented a solution to a problem which doesn't exist. And, lest we not forget the quality of the image of what this box presents itself is determined by the very thing which it is attempting to solve a problem for...so do the math: take the value of this box if you do not have a teevee and add the money to the cost of a HUD teevee instead, viola! You getting it yet? budget for teevee is X, cost of nvidia box is Y. X + Y = total cost (Z) TC is reduced if you remove Y, or, quality of teevee is increased if you change the subject of the formulae to exclude Y by increasing the value of X. Z = (X+Y) - Y Not being trying to be a d1ck here, just explaining to you how consumers see things like this.

It's called innovation. Instead you're saying we should just rely on TV manufactures to continue to push out the same garbage year after year. If it weren't for new devices like Roku, Apple TV, and the early Logitech smart device, the smart TV's on the market now wouldn't exist. The early TV's had a weather app. Oooh that's amazing tech right there. Same thing Nvidia did but with a much more powerful machine with the ability to stream games. Call me when your smart TV can natively play Crysis on its OS and then we'll talk.
Call me when your nvidia box comes with a UHD 4K display.
