So forget the fact that anything from the 750 and up is more than capable of running HDR content, and Nvidia still fully supports these cards, that's some very limited support... Also, AMD no HDR love? The damn Xbox One S and One X are both AMD based!

probably just DRM stuff as usual, AMD with its software openness cant guarantee the same "security"

It's all about DRM and the agreements between the content producers/netflix. As of right now the hardware requires a dedicated HEVC decoder with PlayReady 3.0 support, 970/980/Ti don't have a HEVC decoder, 950/960 does but no PlayReady 3.0 certification. Most people think UVD 6.3+ products from AMD will eventually get support once their PR3.0 certification is complete but it's all speculation at this point. DRM like this is garbage - people already rip 4K streams of netflix. I don't see the point at all.

So much for the supposed "advantage" some ppl claim AMD has over Nvidia (not seen in games performance on console ports...yet) because it provides graphics on MS consoles. But don't worry now AMD has a friend (?!¿) at Microsoft: Mr. Raja Koduri. 😀
I don't really understand this post. Raja works at Intel now, not Microsoft.. and how would you even measure the impact on performance of AMD's hardware in consoles vs an alternate timeline where it wasn't? The idea is that every game developer working on a PS4/Xbox are forced to use AMD's hardware and thus they become more familiar with its quirks and would generally tend to optimize their games for GCN's strengths. How do you know that AMD wouldn't be even further behind Nvidia if they were never in consoles? AMD's lack of HDR is an issue of DRM certification - my Nvidia Shield can do HDR and isn't Play Ready certified because Netflix makes random exclusions for devices they consider "locked down" (hence why Xbox has support) it has nothing to do with AMD being in consoles and everything to do with PC's being open thus DRM requirements being higher.

Well AMD has an overwhelming list of disadvantages in comparison with NVidia. I am not surprised.
And what are these?

I switched to Hulu last month, but I still don't see why they can't just be universal and support both.

I believe it is related to DRM. 4k (I believe all Netflix HDR is also 4k) streaming from Netflix on PCs requires at least a Kaby Lake Intel processor. Windows 10 Anniversary updated added Playready 3.0 DRM which requires dedicated decoding hardware. This was for app\service providers such as Netflix to prevent software recording of 4k streams. It also requires 10-bit HEVC decoding which only Kaby Lake and above do. NVidia 1060 and above support both 10-bit HEVC decoding AND Playready 3.0 DRM. AMD's current CPUs and GPUs are mission one or both Playready 3.0 DRM and/or 10-bit HEVC decoding.

Netflix must really love movie piracy. They seem hellbent on doing everything they can to make people get the movies through p2p. Congratulations. You're giving a huge, HUGE boost to the very thing you're trying to combat.

Total nonsense it needs a 10xx series card. A 9xx can totally do it, just some DRM nonsense. So they see the lacking DRM stuff in pre 10xx cards, and assume someone with the 9xx prior cards want to pirate and share the content? As if there's not a whole bunch of other ways to pirate it, 4k and hdr10 included. Never mind that for a lot of pirate consumers, it's not even 4k hdr, never mind 1080p or 720p. Steam websites are base level quality at best. So who does it protect then? Just use me tv to watch it then.

Similar DRM is actually in 4k TVs. Even with the Netflix app, non-4k TVs without the DRM will not stream 4k streams. You would have to use an Xbox S or something, which also has the DRM. It's just the way it's going to be. AMDs Ryzen APUs "should" support it.

I actually have the correct requirements (Coffee Lake + GTX1080) but I can't get the Netflix app to play anything via the Win10 app as of 2-3 days ago. Probably whenever they rolled out the HDR update. No matter what I choose it says "Oops, this content isn't available, please try again later" or something to that effect. Tried uninstalling the app, signing out, etc. The same account works fine on other devices like the Xbox and PS4.

Yes but I don't need to buy a £300 more device to watch the content from my pc to my tv when I can watch it direct on my tv Basically a whole bunch of hoops to jump through for what will make a tiny fraction of their viewing platform

Sounds like payed exclusivity......

sammarbella:

Microsoft/Intel, i'm so used to the old wintel i mixed them. 🙂 Some friends think AMD has some sort of advantage over Nvidia on console ports to Windows because they are the GPU used on consoles (and specifically MS ones).I don't think so because game devs can't care less about who provides GPUs for consoles, same for MS. So Vbetts remark about AMD and Xbox powered GPU.
So you don't think game developers do any AMD specific optimizations at all on consoles? They just program the engine all willy-nilly and hope they hit decent performance metrics at runtime? ... That's not how this works.
Raider0001:

So you like input lag do U ?
On Netflix? I don't think anyone cares about input lag. As for that slide, it requires games to implement and support specific monitor profiles, which means it will probably never happen.

I understand. I do the same with Amazon Prime, I watch using the TV app instead of loading it on the X1X, unless I want to use headphones, then I use X1X and the wireless headset. I ditched Netflix and Sling for Amazon Prime and Playstation Vue so I also have a FireTV stick, the devices do add up.

In before the last version of PlayReady will be cracked again...

i have a 980gtx ti how the heck it not supported to run HDR....when clearly it can handle it

someone is paying someone to have this exclusive, nothing but BS everywhere you look

it is working on PS4/XBOX so technically AMD hardware is supported
