This is the exact same problem as Blizzard real name forum event. Until someone hacks the execs at microsoft and they get screwed they won't reverse this.

As long as it's possible to remove this thing, even if it's using DISM, I'm good.

Privacy issues - more or less subjective. But seriously... I don't need my PC to do something for helping me... do what? Launch a game? I can say that 99% this update or feature is NOT in my interest or demand, so I can only hope we can deactivate / uninstall / burn it with fire.

I don't like the feature either, but it is the same concept as OS automatically indexing your files, or browser saving your browsing history. Those are features, that you don't even notice anymore since they have been around since forever, but they do the same as Recall only on a different set of data.

Indexing files is not the same as taking screenshots of your desktop and then using learning models to analyse them. Short of someone outright hacking me and looking at my desktop, this is the most serious privacy breach I can imagine. It's what's going to push me to move to Linux, because I simply do not trust Microsoft to leave this disabled forever.

MS is so hilariously out-of-touch with Copilot. All of these "advanced security measures" are what protects your data from other people with access to your PC. The concern is telemetry, which none of those measures address. It just sounds like a politician dodging the real answer to a question that has a sinister undertone.

I think what @Vananovion meant was that Copilot's purpose is to just make things easier for the user to search for something without having to actually load all of the contents. Copilot is actually somewhat similar to a combination of indexing+browser history except it tracks a lot more data and isn't limited to your browser and local files. Since there is so much more data, it kinda needs AI to work efficiently. Having said that (to address @fantaskarsef ) , I could actually see the benefit in Copilot. There had been times I was working on a pretty large project, where a couple hours earlier I closed out of something I thought at the time wasn't important but is completely buried in hundreds of other page visits. I'm not saying I need Copilot or care to have any equivalent to it (knowing MS, I can't imagine how intensely bloated and poorly-optimized it is) but it is a logical next-step above indexing+history. Anyway, as to switching to Linux, there are 2 things I feel are necessary to warn you about: 1. If you stick with Windows primarily because of software compatibility, there's always dual-booting. While Linux is rapidly improving compatibility (mostly thanks to Valve), you're inevitably going to have a hard time if you want to run the newest things. If you're not as concerned about the latest driver features, you can always just run Windows in a VM indefinitely and only use it for the few times something won't run [well] in Linux - GPU forwarding is getting a lot easier these days. 2. If you stick with Windows because it's what you're used to and you don't like how Linux does things, I would suggest running it in a VM or a secondary PC. Use it as much as you possibly can, and if in a VM, take snapshots whenever you feel like you've made good progress so when you inevitably screw up something (breaking stuff is part of the learning process), you can just revert. As I always say: never use another platform (hardware or software) with the expectation that it will have a 1:1 feature/function set to what you came from. If an alternative were to be so identical, there wouldn't be a purpose in it existing. If you want change for the sake of improvement, you're going to have to get uncomfortable. Also, use KDE or Cinnamon if you want to minimize "culture shock". Better to leisurely use it now than to feel forced to use it later.

How the hell MS continues to insist on this feature!!?? Nobody asked for this feature and this is a privacy nightmare. And i can`t imagine the problem is going to be once hackers find an way to exploit this...

I'm sure advertisement organizations and governments asked for it. There's nothing better for them than to have a detailed summary of your every move at the expense of your electric bill rather than theirs - it's a win-win for them!

Typical MS menalitly we know what you want even if you never asked for it. this seem more "feature" that should be part enterprise edition were IT people would want to have such feature, but I will to bet there many other software out there that would do this and probably better. Long as it can be deleted or permanent disabled it fine, though most people wont know about or what it does and will leave it be on there pc if on Windows is akin to this quote imo "jack of all trades, master of none" they cant even sort out there UI functions missing from win11 UI function that worked in win10 that still listed in win11 control panel that just open setting UI for which is what missing the function

Yes, they use data relevant, not everything you do... I don't need to say more to underline my point. And with browser history, I can turn it off. Hence my last post, I hope I can get rid of this function.

I can respect that. Mind you, at work I have no control over what the PCs do anyway, so I can't be bothered. Still I didn't volunteer to be a copilot + beta tester. Also, if it helps, it would be nonsensical (as in, irrational) to not use it. But with my gaming PC I don't need it, and hope to be able to get rid of it. Like with any other feature that I don't need but uses performance that I'd otherwise miss.

At home, just another good reason to be using a Mac Mini every single day.

you would think MS would of learned by now? maybe they gona wait till deploy it and then get sued by everyone and every company? I might have win 11 on my system but i wont put 24h2 on

I never fully accepted that Nadella cut a significant portion of the Microsoft QA team but now, 10 years later, it seems obvious that he did.
