Long as it's not the motherboard, should be fine, otherwise, no-one knows yet, maybe phone activation, maybe that's the end of the license
I imagine you'd be able to revoke your existing license if you're upgrading? This is what I did with my existing Win7 key, did a full upgrade, new cpu/mobo/ram/gpu, but first I revoked the activation on my old PC so it became in a state that needed the product key/activation and retired the old hardware, installed Win7 on the new hardware and activated, no problems. I imagine Microsoft will be fairly flexible about this though, people often upgrade hardware in a similar manner but also there are instances when hardware failures occur for example, sometimes a motherboard replacement is necessary and it's not possible to get a like-for-like replacement.

To anyone having issues starting the update tool (aka: Cannot start windows 10 setup, reboot PC and try again). First, Install and run http://www.thewindowsclub.com/downloading-fixwu Then just install a random important update (I'm sure you have one 😀) from windows update, restart, and boom! that fixed it for me =)!

Did you manage to find anything in the logs? Sounds like it's just going to keep tripping up over whatever the problem is Try clearing all your temp folders, uninstall drivers, monitoring programs, anything that might interfere with the upgrade Disconnect non necessary hardware Run sfc /scannow from elevated CMD Try to fix your original OS before upgrading, 10 is seeing something it doesn't like
It actually tried to reboot this time, but failed and said their was a safeOS error of some kind and restored the windows to the original installation. So, now I am running the SFC thingy. Other than that the system is pretty much clean anyway, as I uninstalled everything prior to doing this. EDIT: I have corrupt system registry files which are irrecoverable - So, I'm ****ed

Upgrading from ISO or USB will create that folder too
that makes sense then I created an ISO to store, then dumped a contents on to a USB, in process of doing VM to makes sure the iso works correct before try on really hardware

I will give it some days (maybe weeks) before jumping to W10, just to be safe from some possible headaches. However I'm curios, I have a valid Windows 7 Ultimate key and a Winows 8 Pro Upgrade key, will I be able to make a USB Windows 10 install stick which I can use in the future to do clean installs?

I have one hp laptop here that took 4 hours to get to 83% on the black upgrade screen. and then stayed there for another hour. I ended up shutting it off and restarted the upgrade. first time was usb drives and usb phone system was attached. this time I removed them and now waiting to see what happens. It is ok to do a clean install of windows 8.1 before upgrading to windows 10? if it upgrades gets stuck again. I might try a clean install of 8.1

7 Hours later and I'm finally done creating the iso..

My machines are hogging my line, downloading the update version, none are installready yet. Slows the download of the new NV driver to a crawl. If there's still no install when the line calms down, I'll try the forced route.

Upgraged my Windows 8.1 laptop, now Windows refuses to activate. Help telles me to go to the Store after click Activate in Settings, but there is no option to go to the store. I have 2 computers now with the same problem. Why must they make this so complicated?

finally got it working...finally.
I plugged the monitor into the MB gfx card using HDMI, that seemed to do it.

I had an issue too with ativating plus downloading apps from the store; one hour later it was ativated without me doing anything. I guess the traffic is really intense today.
Got it top work, just need to keep on clicking Activate, and now its activated, Microsoft obviosuly have not planned this too well, give something away for free, they should have expected a huge demand.

Install on the first machine FAILED. Couldn't safe boot, reverted to Windows 7.
