Microsoft placed a tool online that downloads an ISO file which can be used to then force an install of Windows 10. This update is free for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users.... Microsoft offers online tool to force Windows 10 update
Your link is fine, but the tool isn't. Still failing...

They can force all they want, but i wont be getting Win 10 untill next year. I'm still using Norton Ghost 15, so i can't even Upgrade as that only works on Win 7.

I will wait and see how you all get on with this, no way i want to have to download 2tb of steam games again if it all goes pear shaped.

Small update, I just upgraded the main VGA test rig. No problems thus far. All installed applications are still there. After installing the graphics card driver the control panel is back. Running some GFX benchmarks to see if everything is properly working. But yeah, at least on this end all seems fine, and to the above post that includes Steam, Origin and Gog installs.

How are you trying to upgrade? From Windows Update? Try using the media creation tool and running it from ISO/USB Probably have to run system files disk cleanup first to remove the temp install folder
I'm using the tool and yes, I had already run that.

The more machines I install this on, the buggier I realize it is.

Same tool created me an AIO 32bit and 64bit ISO earlier, works fine
How long did yours take to complete? I'm going on 3 hours now and still at 7%.. Could be the MS servers taking a hammering..right?

For those that wonder. Graphics perf seems about 99.98% the same. Example: GTX 980 Ti does 100 points more in the overall P scores opposed to Windows 8.1.

I was getting about 5-6MB/s, dunno, maybe 20-30 mins? But yea, loads more people will be grabbing the ISOs now, hammering has commenced
Thanks for the quick reply, how do you check the speed?

I use this http://download.cnet.com/NetSpeedMonitor-64-bit/3000-2085_4-75592519.html Install it in "Previous version of windows" compatibility mode Right click the taskbar and choose Toolbars > Netspeedmonitor Then use the config setting to set it up how you want to see your speeds You'll get one popup asking to donate to paypal, close it and that's it finished asking
Thanks again for all your informative posts man! Much appreciated!

Great...4th attempt at this, and now it seems the original 40MBPS download speed has dropped to a pathetic 1.7 and is likely to take 92 quadrillion hours to install. And when it does - I bet it fails again...for no reason with no error code at all. bull$hit

Do they give you a key when you install or how does it work if you want to reformat and reinstall?

So if thats the case what happens if I upgrade some part of my computer? I used to simply call microsoft with the installation ID, is it gonna be the same?

Does Windows 10 have any features that improve over Windows 7? I don't have a DirectX12 card and I love 7, no problems with that ever. 🙂 Sorry if this isn't the place to ask.
That's pretty subjective, you're going to have to do your own research on what features there are and decide whether you want to get a free OS or not. Here's a decent video which goes over most of the basic usability and some feature stuff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDGiXqU0MfE Also I don't think you need a newer GPU to get the most important aspect of DX12 i.e. the cpu stuff, but don't quote me on that.

I was going to update my win 8.1 office pc but as it is due a hardware upgrade I am going to wait as purchasing a new OS is not going to happen
