What would you get that's different to purchasing it? or..... if you subscribe to it long enough do you then pay off the price of it and you then own it?

I don't like subscriptions, I prefer one off payments for most things if it can be helped.

would need to be cheap as buying the OS for £100 and using for 5 years make the OS almost nothing a month maybe Microsoft office would be part of the subscription

Since I use a computer everyday ! Would happy apply to a subscription based program with one condition. The price should not be more then 2 euro a mounth . Or it's better to buy it now as otherwise it would cost You more on the long run

The point of this move, for Microsoft, is to make more money. There's no way it would be cheaper than buying the OS licence. Unless they double or triple the price of the one-off purchase, which would make it cheaper short-term. Now the problem for them is that even if they get a decent amount of money when a person gets a Windows licence, it only happens rarely. They would like to get that much every year. The other problem are the OEM licences, which predominate the consumer market. MS no doubt would like to chance that so that Windows registration is only valid for a year, for example, from the purchase of the PC, and then people would start to pay monthly subscription.

Everyone and their dogs knew this was coming. Microsoft can suck a not so micro hard.

This could start a catalyst that pushes folk onto other platforms, or open source OS's.

Nah. Nothing will happen as long as MS keeps their one-time-buy license model along with the subscription.
The cynic in me doubts if MS will keep the One -time models;)

People will just migrate to a different OS, or even more home users will use the yo ho ho dark side to 'ahem' activate / licence ? their product.

It is hard to justify the cost of a licence with the way every update to windows 10 ends up creating more problems more down time and lost working hours and now they want you to pay a sub to be a beta tester what a P--- Take.

Unless they give people an option to skip their crappy home and pro versions and go for a version that really lets you have control over your PC without 3rd party applications, I'm not even remotely interested.

Linux distros are smiling.

It would be q good way for Microsoft to get rid of all those pesky customers that have been bugging them all this time.... Seriously, if they do this, they will lose market share hand over fist. Its been in the pipeline for years, and it seems they never buried it, just waiting for the right time to announce it....

The point of many expensive software subscriptions like for Adobe Photoshop is two fold: (a) You may only need it occasionally and can pay month by month, while the full product is really expensive (b) You get the latest version whenever its out, without having to re-buy it every 2 years (which goes well with temporary use in (a)) That may or may not make sense for something like Office, but there is enough people using Office 365 already.

Ah. Great. "PC as a pay for service." Except the PC is actually yours and you have to pay a subscription to use it. Mark my words. This will be mandatory at some point. That's where we're heading towards. You won't own any applications, games or the OS. They'll be "services." Any non-service software will be locked out "for better security." Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that Linux exists.

Ah aha ha haham, dear Nadella, I am going to buy it soon! ... What, you didn't receive the payment, you kinda Indian Scrooge? I was talking about the coffee, you know, I just finished the last can!

You already can't buy MS Office in full. I'd never support them doing this if I can manage it. Even Apple, the Queen of subscription services, knows better than to do this.

This isn't new news.. they have been talking about this since before W10 and it being datamined. The line in the sand from what I could figure out was consumer one time purchased vs enterprise being licensed. With w10pro costing more for certain higher core count processors and the change in server licensing from chip to core. It just another money grab.

Every now and then I download a Linux distro that I like the look of, just in case this subscription crap looks in danger of becoming a reality on Windows 🙄 At least we have alternatives 🙂
