I don't see how this is news to anyone, I disabled all of the telemetry stuff from the beginning, and there is a lot of it.

After seeing a post on Reddit - who cares if M$ is trying to monitor you - According to a recent REDDIT post - Intel has it all built in to the CPU so you can't disable or firewall any monitoring out.
I saw on reddit that Donald Trump AND George W Bush are reptilians that want to invade Canada and then overthrow the Queen! I'm not saying Windows protects your privacy, but this is the exact same thing that EVERYONE knew about before Windows 10 was released. If you paid attention, and turned it off - IT STAYED OFF. If you got your news from reddit, you were too busy looking at cat gifs to get the facts, and now 2 years later, you've had a revelation. Take off the tinfoil and think about this. Would they have a "secret keylogger" that everyone on the planet (except the reddit crowd) knew about before day 1? Would this secret keylogger have a great big off switch in the security settings? Go look at WikiLeaks instead of reddit and you will see that NOTHING you do online is private and any semi-modern device is vulnerable and many of them come from the factory pre-loaded. It's not just Windows, OSX, Linux, and even more obscure OS's are just as bad. Obviously, all mobile OS's are terrible in this regard. It's not Intel's remote management features you need to worry about, but UNDOCUMENTED capabilities like this that are built in to modern hardware. You don't see it, and you can't turn it off. This is a big distraction from the truth. We have no privacy online, and it's not as simple turning off an option in Windows.

What’s really crazy is that there are still people using Windows after all that Microsoft has done.
And what's the alternative? Linux? Sorry, my games won't run on it. Neither anything that is relevant. I honestly think the last real great OS, and I bet a lot will heartily disagree, was the Windows 98. And Windows 2000 to some extent. They were very little intrusive UI-wise and there were little interference from MS on anything beside the base OS. If there was a real alternative to Windows, probably most domestic users would go for it. 100% power users would go for sure. But since no company or group feels the need to tackle MS monopoly, we are left with this communist approach OS-wise. Stratospheric prices with little return of the investment.

You mean you will be forced to use it in 2020. Unless you want go Linux and play the 1,5 Games that support it.
Vulkan is actually a thing in 2017. As more studios support it, by 2020 I expect support to grow.

Don't you watch Star Trek, Vulkan, the core, collapsed in on itself. It is a singularity now.

Greyed out settings in Win 10 are usually due to anti spying programs, and changes to group policy
Yup, mine's greyed out and I remember changing GPO's back when I first installed Windows 10. I prefer doing the tweaks manually rather then let a program do them. I prefer to know what I change and if it's for the better (usually it is though, but there are exceptions).

I am fairly sure I disabled it, and when I checked this morning it was enabled. Likely that got enabled again after an update.
I just checked on a fresh install and it's disabled...?

This is NOT new. This is all about handwriting on tablets, it is related on the interpretation of your calligraphy and the translation you add/modify when the system does not recognize it correctly. This is since Microsoft added handwriting support on Windows XP for Tablet Edition. The big difference is that you can now easily disable it. A key-logger is a completely different thing.

Intel Management Engine is a firmware which also allow the user to lock down the device remotely. You must pay for that service, and you must have the correct hardware. Not all Intel hardware has that feature. Finally, firmware with ring-0 pre-emption on the OS has been around since laptop with stand-by feature when you close the screen.

Guru3D used to be a great source for tech info and solid, honest reviews and the forums generally had very knowledgeable and helpful participants. The reviews tend to be pretty solid still. Yet, for these past few years it seems that the rest of the site is more of an advertisement for tin-foil and hopping on the band-wagon to get clicks than anything else. And don't get me started on the forums. Sure, there are still the valiant few here that hold the line, but the majority has definitely fallen from grace.
This. It would be finny when they will receive the first legal charges...

Privacy? Welcome to 2017 where your privacy is a comodity sold by the people who care only about their bank accounts and nothing else. Want your privacy back? Change and adapt.Be aware, prepare for the worst. There is a big gap to be filled by Vulkan, Wine, SteamOS and gaming on Linux, but eventually we will getting somewhere. For now one can game in Linux, but there are trade-offs.Apart from SteamOS, Manjaro has the best built-in tuned options for Steam and gaming on Wine. Even so, for everyday use, one can run ChromeOS, a favour of GNU/Linux and could be none the wiser about the OS.

Assuming turning a setting off in a settings menu created by Microsoft turns off something Microsoft wants.

Remember that... ...BigBadBill's m$ is, practically a state-owned (CIA/NSA/FBI) company, whose MAIN purpose is to SPY people across the World (not just USA).

I actually will be one to agree with your re: win 98. It was a great OS and overall I had little issues with it during my time using it. I found XP to be great as well, but 98 was the first step and imo was a good one.

At my screen it's grayed out. I found this quote: "This is based on that in the privacy settings under "Settings" -> "Privacy" -> "Feedback & diagnostics" -> "Diagnostics and usage data" it is set to "Basic". Change it to "Enhanced" or higher, the message disappears." here. Now the red message is gone but still I've got the option disabled by default.
This guy is correct, at least for my install. No modifications or other anti-MS-spy programs installed on my Windows 10, just vanilla. Changing from Recommended to Basic greys out the setting, and switching back to Recommended immediately makes it changeable (but still off). Can repeat as much as I want.

Nope, this is a keylogger plain and simple.
Btw best part - that button is only for sending, if you turn it off it still keylogg just not send... It will send all data when will be auto-enabled on next update ;-)
Yep, exactly this. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I didn't think you could disable telemetry on Win 10 Home, and Win 10 Pro got the same treatment with the anniversary update. The general point here is that we lost control of our PC's some time ago. Big companies install what they want, take what they want and even delete what they want. All of this takes place just from such simple things as updates that are described in detail, but miss out the privacy stuff. Look no further than Nvidia drivers, they come with all kinds of telemetry. Love that older version of GFE without the login requirement on your PC ? Soon deleted when you run the driver installer.

I remember disabling it but now it's grayed out. Can't click on it but it shows as disabled.

As far back as I remember that option being there, it was on by default for me until I completely disabled whatever was tied to that (now it's greyed out, and I don't remember what I did :wanker:). After first noticing it was re-enabled I checked on it a few times after updates. Some updates reset it, not all. But I did confirm it can reset after an update.
