That's one way they can hope to get more programs converted to store apps. Still, nobody has ever bought a windows device to use a UWP. Why would I want to cede control to MS? What if I want to use an older version or stay ahead of the curve with an alpha? I use standalone programs now and I couldn't be happier. I don't want to redownload everything from their crappy store and hope things will be restored everytime things go wrong because the UWP part of windows is the most fragile part.

I don't think it has a lot to do with what you want, it's about trying extract money from developers of Windows applications. If in future, if they were to lock the Windows platform down, given that Windows phone is dead and the vast majority of Windows PC users are office based or use Windows platform precisely because of it's freedom, it would seem to me like another fairly stupid move from M$, just hastening the time when everyone uses Linux.

I've used the Windows store exactly once, when Windows 8.1 upgrade came through it. Other than that I don't see it, I don't open it, I don't miss anything. Neither do I see the Windows 10 startmenu. The 5€ I invested into Stardock's Start 10 have been one of the best investments I ever made. I can enjoy a fully nag- and adfree Windows.

Microsoft has made a lot of mistakes in the last years but i don't see a future lock-down of Windows platform. Anyway, It would be a clear act of abuse of dominance, wich is forbidden by the EU market regulations and surely the same goes for US.

It'd be hard to believe even MS would be that stupid. For now I'm far more willing to believe it really is just a security feature meant to generally limit the installation of all third party software. If it suddenly gets turned on by default, then it's time to get worried. Although that being said, in Android software only from the Play store is the default setting, I believe. I've never used iPhone, but knowing Apple I reckon it's even more restricted.

it's not aimed at this purpose, it's more like the "use only google play app" 's button in Android... not for us but for lambda user who have not too many knowledge on Windows... i think it's a good thing.

I would like an option to remove Windows Store and all forced "apps" for security reasons of course.

Exactly, even if this optional feature were to be on by default, there would be a lawsuit against MS.

Windows 7 will live on this machine for years to come. I suspect my next OS isn't going to be Micro$oft though...

This is good for family/kids PCs, especially if they will add a white-list application setting. This is also good for enterprise if they will also add the ability to change OR add the application origin. Actually, closing and block-listening applications is an annoying task. Hope this come for external devices too.

Two things here. The day will never come when even more than 10% use crappy Linux and, Windows phone is not dead. Windows 10 Mobile is high on the priority list for this year and there will be new phones, probably Surface branded, that will run it.
Crappy Linux? It really depends on what you need on your desktop/server, same as for the percentage of how many people that use Linux, desktops for web development are around 20%. As for Windows Phone, it is discontinued/dead. Windows 10 Mobile on the other hand is on it's way to Redstone 2 and might hopefully get some more love on the hardware side regardless the low sales in the past, the Surface Phone is just rumors for now.

WTF is up with all them negative comments and evil scheme claims? It is a user/admin based option that can be used to improve security, mainly useful for schools, companies and none power users.

I wish it wasn't true, but, deep down I know you're right.

I believe the Bing/tablet version of 10 does this already? Or isn't there a low resource version that only allows Windows Store apps?

Because MS haters lunatics without any sense of reality. Don't try to make sense of nonsense.
This is wrongly labeled as UWP-thingy in the first place. First of all you can install UWP apps from outside Store. Secondly, developers can submit Win32 apps to the Store though the app converter (which forces a few security-related guidelines). This is purely for controlling the source of apps, not technology they are using.

This is all brought to you by making the mobile platform experience available on the desktop. Remember this is an effort to make the same experience across all platforms. Making this a reality requires the least common denominator to rise to the surface. This is the rise of a new dawn; one size fits all. Microsoft is just late to the party with this approach. Google and Apple have had it for years.
