My old EVGA X79 Dark mobo used a marvell SATA controller. It was the worst part on the entire motherboard. Glad I got rid of that mess.

My eSata ports are marvell. Massive problems using my external casing with a 3.5 inch 4 TB drive. Had to resort to using this: http://www.caloptic.com/store/images/eSATAPBKT-2.jpg With the main non marvel sata ports on the motherboard.
