so the multicore performance crown is still in AMD hands?

This isn't, honestly, looking too good for Intel because AMD will eventually release the new gen of TR, yet Intel is struggling against AMD's current gen. The maximum power use also reveals Intel had to go out of their way to boost very high in order to compete. But then again, that's something Intel had to keep doing ever since the first gen of Zen appeared.
The price of the CPU isn't probably that big of an issue for professionals for whom it's a business investment, but these days power use is a delicate issue because a whole lot companies try to pretend they care about the environment and all that stuff.

A bit so/so, it's a good CPU, but previous gen TR is above...
So i imagine compared with the next one that is just around now.

Just like the 6,5years old 7980xe, it's pretty slow @stock settings and slow xmp memory.
6800+ tweaked memory, and the cpu is another animal! Stay tuned 😉

Roman "der8auer" Hartung has one of the W9-3495X CPUs running on DDR5 6400 R-DIMMs from G.Skill and broke 70k r23 at otherwise stock settings. Something tells me at the very least the high end workstation setups will be utilizing memory like this (Roman mentioned ECC, but the G.Skill press release didn't so I'm guessing these may be registered without ECC). As for performance it's most certainly going to depend on application given that it has 8 fewer CPU cores than existing TR. It will be interesting to see what the custom workstation OEMs come up with as these chips seem to have a lot of potential if you have the cooling.

I see why amd was in no rush to launch thread ripper 5000, even if these launched a year ago the threadripper 3000 chips would only be slightly behind and offer much better price/performance for most threaded workloads and probably better overall if you intend to overclock , the high power consumption is really starting to hurt them by limiting the frequency they can sustain with sane cooling.

It's the fastest in R23 right now, so it isn't very bad 😛
