I don't see the big deal. After 9000 comes 10000. Easier to deal with a naming scheme we already know and mostly understand, then learn a new one.

It would actually make sense if they used the number to refer to the number of cores:
i2 DualCore
i4 QuadCore
etc

Not for i2, because originaly i3 was meaning "I"ntel core"3", and so the i2 should be the core2 line.
i0 might be a bad idea too (even in " i0 gold KFC my dog's anniversary limited edition 🙂 " )
But i agree, 4 digits should be the limit of easy to read and remember....

Years can end up equally confusing, especially since the entire lineup is not always being released at once. For example, the 9900K is clearly a 2018 CPU. But what about many of the other 9000 series, which were released in 2019? Are those 2019 CPUs? Or 2018? They are very closely related to the 9900K afterall, which is a 2018, just smaller.
Tieing yourself down to something like the year is not flexible enough for how hardware is being released. So either you follow it very strictly, and its confusing, or you relax it - and it ends up just like any other arbitrary number and loses much of its meaning.

It's always been a headache, we've just had it for so long that we've grown numb to it.
Makes a lot of sense to me. Though I would adjust it like this:

Where # is the performance tier, yy is the year, cc is the core count, and s is the X, K, U, etc suffix.

Here's the question, what will people call it?
Ten Nine hundred ?
Ten thousand Nine hundred?
One O Nine Hundred?
One Zero Nine Hundred?
One hundred and nine zero zero?
Ten-Series nine hundred?
So many different ways, none of them good.
If they plan to go to the 10 series they should have just called it a 19000k and then skipped to 29000k next generation.
In all honesty, ten-series nine hundred sounds best though. for instance, people ask what you got in your PC all the time, i could see people saying "i7 10-series nine-ninety-k" for a i7 10990k(example)

Remember the transition from Pentium to core 2 duo/quad and then to i5/i7 name scheming? They need something like that, familiar but new.

Something like core X would do nicely, But frankly something cheesy and or silly doesn't surprise me, given the brain drain that has happened at intel's marketing division over the years
