I guess I will need some popcorn here. All other tech sites that have had this article so far turned out to be fight club...:D All I can say is I'm happy to see that Intel is back in game, this is exactly what users need, some competition. Price will be an issue I recon.

I'll bet the perf/watt figures will favor Zen 3 by a good margin. I hate this trend of increased power just to beat the competition in benches. Its rumored that Nvidia will also take this approach with the 4xxx series GPUs.

Its not like Zen3 can't consume these wattage numbers. Even on a mediocre OC my 5950X runs 200W on peak, and the only limit is that I don't have a custom loop to dissipate more heat.

We know what AMDs response will be - more cache. We'll see how that helps across different workloads. Either way, its good for everyone to have innovation and competition. Having a mix of core types might seem odd for a desktop, but due to the size of the E cores they can fit more in without needing chiplets, which allows them to boost MT to these levels.

Amd real response will be zen4 and that is rumored to be next year so zen3/v-cache is what they have until then. I have to admit it table seems to turn once again. Intel has been playing catch up and they it for now.

Why the heck a processor with 8 big core and 8 little cores would consume 300W!!! I guess Intel is pushing the frequency to the boundaries of what the silicon can handle before it start leaking.
It seems that they've hit a block with the ability to make smaller transistors. Juist like GPUs, increased performance also comes with increases power use. 1000W power supplies will become bare minimum very soon!

I got my 5900x 12core to consume 350w. Not hard at all with all core oc 🙂 My 5950x oc with 3090 consume 850w in Battlefield V 🙂

That's Zen2 - my 3700X for example is a really leaky chip, needs a lot of voltage to do an all core 4.4ghz and on single core it can't go higher than 4.45ghz (its max default boost is 4.4ghz). AMD practically perfected 7nm design with Zen3 (and RDNA2) which has significantly more clock speed headroom and able to undervolt. Zen3 chips can also reach the fabled 5ghz mark

This^^ I also dislike this approach of increasing power to ridiculous levels just to get a few more percent of performance only to look better on benchmarks. Intel, Nvidia and AMD are basically selling overclocked products for the sake of getting the upper hand regarding benchmarks.

If my math knowledge is right, difference between 200 and 300 is 50%. If we put it backward, difference between 300 and 200 is 33,3%! That's a lot difference if You ask me!

Yeah I'm running 4.7 Ghz all core on my 5950x. Could also go with PBO + CO but yeah.

Nvidia has already done this with Ampere (3080). With undervolting, the card can shave off nearly 100w yet retain 95% of its performance. If it wasnt for RDNA2 spooking them, they would not have done that imo. They just want that little bit extra to put them ahead in reviews.

absolutely nvidia is guilty of that,the company that was the defintition of power efficiency with 80 series cards like 980 and 1080 absolutely ruined it with 3080.although,frankly,3080 is a 102 die.If we had a normal 3080,that is ga104,it'd still be power efficient,just slower.a lot slower. also, amd shouldn't just parrot every stupid thing nvidia does. they did it with sku positioning ("1080p powerhouse" 6600xt for 380msrp is just sad) as well as power consumption on 6800xt/6900xt.

Yes that would be true if they where 16 high performance cores, it is 16 core that has 8 hight power cores that are hyperthreaded, and 8 high efficient small cores that are not hyper threaded this how you end up with 24 threads . That said to everyone here is unknown how efficient are those small cores and what kind of a performance they bring to the table . They might be just really something like atoms ok for browsing and dead horses after that, they might be x86 cpus that got rid all of legacy support instructions for compatibility so paper weight for any program that came before 2010 ... But equal or faster to the big cores if you use the latest instruction set .... We do not know we will really have to wait reviews !
