Hmm these chips offer just about everything I'm looking for when it comes to upgrading my system. I'm going to wait for AMD's new bulldozer-successor architecture first and see how they compare. The only thing about these chips I know I won't like are the price points. I'd have to say, I'm a little disappointed about the wattage. The 8 core is understandable, but c'mon intel, you should be able to get below 120W for a 6 core at this point.

Same with me I personally will probably wait till better DDR4 speeds are acquired or matured and till features like PCI-E 4.0, NVLink and SATA express is finalized with more then 3 ports! "Intel 200 series will have that" It's also possible but not probable that INTEL may release a 10 core variant of Skylake or Skymont but that's at least 2 to 3 years away! A 10 core Skymont might achieve a 25% difference VS a 4core haswell chip? In multithread performance at least. Real gains is when new silicon technology is used and that won't be till about 2020? 🙁
DDR4 might have short life in grand scheme of memory technology that is coming through. Imagine ram with stacked chips like they are placing on future GPU's, high density, very fast compared to DDR4 an lower power.

Looks like X99 will be here for a long time, this Haswell-E >then> Skylake-E there is no Broadwell-E DT, only EX for servers. I might upgrade to Skylake-E 8core then, should be like this 5820K now as default 6 core. Hopefully it will be more then max 3.3ghz like @ 5960X.. Haswell needs at least 4.5ghz to be worth it for per core performance 🤓

Haswell Z !!! Oh wait...

what happen to the higher base clocks.

Still can't believe how long I've managed to go without upgrading my Motherboard/RAM, built this thing back in 2010. I only upgraded my old i7 920 to the 980x late last year cos it was going cheap on eBay, but it's looking like the arrival of DDR4 and some octacore goodness might finally be worth it.

I better start saving. This will be the only real upgrade for me. a 5930K, X99, and DDR4. I just can't see myself going to Z97 and 4790K for an almost non existent performance boost. I'll either wait for prices to come down, or put back as much as I can to save for it.
Same here, it's not even worth the hassle to physically build a new rig as the practical upgrade is 5% tops... x99 however might be it. 🙂

I know what you mean. I built my system in 2010 too, but continuously upgraded it as I went along (added more RAM, put in better CPUs, slapped in a 2nd GPU, etc). I don't expect to play games or do work at peak speeds, so I never had a compelling reason to upgrade. I've decided that I will only perform upgrades when most, if not all aspects about my system have become obsoleted, in a generational point of view. So for example, I'll do a GPU upgrade if it supports a version of DirectX or openGL that my current model doesn't support, but I won't get an upgrade if it's just simply a faster model. I'll do a SSD upgrade if it supports a successor to SATA3, but I won't get a new SSD just because it has a new controller. Ideally, I'll be upgrading my whole system all at once. Too much of my current system is too obsolete to make any more incremental upgrades worth doing.

140W TDP limit.

With only a 3.0ghz clock speed on the 5960X vs the 5930K which has 3.5ghz, there doesn't seem to be much incentive to buy the 5960X. I mean, what program uses 8 cores? They're just gonna be sitting there on standby most of the time. Both CPU's have the 2x16, 1x8. The only thing the 5960X does better is have a higher cache

Battlefield 10 i think...

lol true story... and even then it would still crash XD

What game will use 8 cores? How bout a little game called Star Citizen? For anyone in video production, multiple applications will utilize 8 cores.. hell I built a system for our Visual Effects guy in my studio and its a 32 core (2x 16 core Operton) beast of a system that takes his rendering times down by a lot. I'm grabbing 5930 for SURE when it comes out to replace my SB chip. Gonna start with a single GPU and then SLI when I need the extra oomph.

5930 is the one for me... Want a balance between number of cores and single core speed. Would have gone for the 8 core but not prepared to give up to much in terms of mhz.

You know Intel are gonna charge the earth for the 5960X but for the price, you'd expect it to at least have the same ghz (or higher) than the 5930K or higher

With that TDP rating you shouldn't. It will be overclockable (with appropriate) cooling past the 4ghz mark I'm sure.

Guys your not going to get lots of games using 8 cores. This is a niche market and the devs will develop for the majority which is quad core. Devs are out to make money remember. I see nothing changing and cpu support being the same what it is now.
True, though the 6 core + DDR4 might be nice, some few games like BF3, 4 even take some advantage of that. The 8 core of Haswell-E will be like the Q6600 was back in the day, something cool, but before it's time... an opener for a new generation in the years to come. 🙂

Doubt very much we'll see the 50%+ OCs we did out of the Q6600, OCed my mate's one from 2.4 to 3.6 IIRC. Those chips were nuts.

Yes it was epic, also an epic price for those times on release. I wanted to get one, but oped for a dual core and better GPU back in the day.
